This position reports to the Chief, National Guard Bureau

Key Responsibilities

The Inspector General is the Department of War Component Inspector General for the NGB and serves as the principal advisor to the CNGB (O-10) and the Vice CNGB (O-10) on all assessed matters relating to the discipline, efficiency, economy, morale, training, and readiness of the NG and NGB, and other oversight matters of importance.

NGB-IG as a Personal Staff officer to CNGB serves as an information conduit, with advice on strategic issues and general officer matters within the National Guard. The incumbent liaises with persons and organizations outside NGB to include collaboration with the Departments of War, Army, and Air Force, members of Congress and their staff, as well as Governors and The Adjutants General in the Several States.

The incumbent is responsible for the organizational vision and all functions of the NGB-IG including planning, formulation, and execution of policies, objectives, and goals. NGB-IG provides senior-level policy and analytical support to the CNGB and Vice CNGB, and Inspector General support to the Directors of the Army and Air National Guard and the NGB Director of Staff.

As the functional manager for National Guard Inspector General activities, NGB-IG develops, leads, and implements the organizational vision of the National Guard Inspector General enterprise, incorporating high performance organization concepts to transform individual efforts into highly productive work-teams by integrating leadership, management, technical and team skills, values, and behaviors.

The incumbent directs a required permanent staff of 38 military and civilian inspectors general and oversees the work of 54 State Inspectors General (O-6/O-5 military officers), and through them, up to 500+ inspectors general in the Several States. As the key executive for NGB-IG, the incumbent ensures National Guard equities are included in Department of War and the Departments of the Air Force and Army Inspector General programs and policies.

NGB-IG serves as a member of the Defense Council on Integrity and Efficiency and represents National Guard equities at the Department of War Whistleblower Reprisal roundtable and other Departmental working groups.

The incumbent is responsible for the execution of Department of War Inspector General programs and activities within the National Guard Bureau, and oversight and execution of the Army and Air Force Inspector General functions for the National Guard, including Army Inspections, Investigations, Assistance, Teach and Train, and Air Force Complaints Resolution and Inspections.

This includes oversight of inspections, readiness assessments, sensitive matters, and Department of War, Army and Air Force Senior Official Investigation notifications to the Governors and the CNGB.

On behalf of CNGB, NGB-IG also oversees intelligence and intelligence-related oversight responsibilities including the conduct of intelligence oversight inspections throughout the National Guard-assessing the compliance of all activities, operations, and programs with applicable laws, executive orders, policies, and directives.

Additionally, NGB-IG is the conduit from the National Guard to the Department of War for reports of Questionable Intelligence Activities and Sensitive/ Highly Sensitive Matters.
