Job summary

Flyttr is seeking an Insect Scientist to join a cross-disciplinary team focused on pioneering biosecurity technologies. You will establish insect colonies, design and execute experiments, and generate high-quality data to advance project goals.

You will work under a Senior Scientist, ensuring rigorous data collection, meticulous documentation, and clear communication of results. A strong background in entomology and data analysis is essential.

Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s or master’s degree in entomology, biology, or biochemistry is required.
  • Excellent written and oral communication in English.
  • Based in the US and legally authorized to work.
  • Strong technical abilities for the role.
  • Competency in MS Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Experience in insect husbandry and/or maintaining insect colonies is desirable.
  • Expertise in insect or arthropod transformation is highly desirable.
  • Proficiency in R/R Studio and statistics is highly desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Generate self-limiting insect strains and evaluate against project metrics.
  • Design and run experiments aligned with program goals, with Senior Insect Scientist endorsement.
  • Carefully record data and document activities and processes in laboratory books.
  • Contribute to data analysis, report data in meetings, and write clear internal reports.
  • Provide clear communication regarding outcomes with the Senior Insect Scientist.
  • Support the laboratory’s smooth operation, maintain SOPs and safety records.
  • Follow and update SOPs, COSHH and risk assessments.
  • Manage and train any direct report per SOPs and training records.
  • Provide occasional weekend support as part of a rota.
