Job Description

General Summary

Under general supervision, fills orders for unit doses, pre-packaged pharmaceuticals, intravenous admixtures, controlled substances, floor stock, supplemental medications, emergency kits, and general stock. Maintains proper levels of pharmaceutical supplies, instruments, and equipment. Performs related pharmacy duties such as drug product recalls and pharmacy area inspections. Delivers and picks up medications and related items to and from patient care areas. Assists with training less experienced technicians in their assigned areas.

Principal Responsibilities and Tasks

The following describes the general nature and level of work performed by personnel in this role. It is not an exhaustive list of all duties.

  1. Assist in training new employees or those less familiar with their area.
  2. Perform monthly medication expiration audits at satellite locations.
  3. Assist in patient medication safety audits and inspections as trained.
  4. Prepare and dispense medication orders for inpatient and outpatient populations, based on physician orders and patient profiles, in accordance with departmental procedures.
  5. Deliver and pick up pharmacy documents and medications across departments.
  6. Enter Admissions, Discharges, and Transfers (ADTs) into the system.
  7. Package and label medications for inspection and approval.
  8. Enter orders into the pharmacy system under supervision, including TPN orders.
  9. Prepare sterile intravenous medications using aseptic techniques.
  10. Fill drug and supply requests as instructed.
  11. Prepare and dispense controlled substances, maintain inventories, and coordinate proper disposal with authorities.
  12. Document all vital information regarding DEA-controlled substances and perform random audits.

Return reusable medications and supplies appropriately. Maintain inventory levels, track stock, verify incoming supplies, and resolve discrepancies with vendors. Manage expired medications and ensure proper disposal. Conduct scheduled inventory and replenish stock in patient care areas. Process medication recalls per policy. Ensure cleanliness and organization of the pharmacy environment, including proper storage and labeling of medications.

Generate reports from pharmacy databases, respond to departmental requests, and communicate issues to supervisors. Follow safety, security, environmental, and infection control standards. Assist with equipment maintenance and participate in training and hiring processes. Attend educational programs for professional development. Complete assigned duties as per area checklists and perform related tasks as needed.
