Inpatient Pharmacy Technician, Overnights 7 On 7 Off

General Summary

Under general supervision, fills orders for unit doses, pre-packaged pharmaceuticals, intravenous admixtures, controlled substances, floor stock, supplemental medications, emergency kits, and general stock. Maintains proper levels of pharmaceutical supplies, instruments, and equipment. Performs related pharmacy duties such as drug product recalls and pharmacy area inspections. Delivers and picks up medications and related items to and from patient care areas. Assists with training less experienced techs in their assigned areas.

Principal Responsibilities and Tasks

The following statements describe the general nature and level of work performed by personnel in this classification. They are not exhaustive of all job duties.

  • Assist in training new or less experienced employees in their staffing areas.
  • Perform monthly medication expiration audits at satellite locations.
  • Participate in patient medication safety audits and inspections, assisting the Technical Coordinator as needed.
  • Prepare and dispense medication orders for inpatient and outpatient populations, based on physician orders and patient profiles, in accordance with departmental procedures.
  • Deliver and retrieve pharmacy documents and medications across departments.
  • Enter Admissions, Discharges, and Transfers (ADTs) into the computer system.
  • Package and label medications into unit doses for pharmacist approval.
  • Enter orders into the pharmacy computer system under pharmacist supervision, including TPN orders.
  • Prepare sterile intravenous medications using aseptic technique.
  • Handle drug and supply requests as instructed.
  • Prepare and dispense controlled substances, maintain inventories, and coordinate DEA return procedures.
  • Document all vital information for DEA controlled substances requests and perform random audits.

Return reusable medications and supplies appropriately.

Maintain inventory levels of medications and supplies, tracking stock and ensuring availability per established par levels.

  • Verify incoming supplies against purchase orders, store properly, and report shortages.
  • Resolve discrepancies with vendors or purchasing staff.
  • Manage expired medications and dispose of them properly, including controlled substances in accordance with regulations.
  • Complete scheduled inventory counts for medications, solutions, and supplies.
  • Replenish floor stock and related medications in patient care areas.
  • Process medication recalls per departmental policies.
  • Ensure cleanliness and organization of the pharmacy, including proper shelving and removal of cardboard packaging.

Generate routine and special reports from pharmacy databases.

Respond to telephone requests, providing excellent customer service, and escalate problems as needed.

Follow departmental policies, safety standards, and infection control protocols.

  • Perform inspections of pharmacy areas.
  • Handle hazardous substances safely, observing universal precautions.

Assist with maintenance of pharmacy equipment and supplies, including refrigerators, freezers, and safety cabinets.

  • Perform routine equipment maintenance, monitor temperature controls, and ensure proper functioning.
  • Clean laminar flow hoods and safety cabinets aseptically, documenting actions appropriately.

Participate in interviewing and training new staff, and attend educational programs for professional growth.

Follow assigned responsibilities and shift checklists, performing additional duties as required.

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Completion of an accredited Pharmacy Technician Training Program and national certification preferred.
  • Maryland BOP registration required.
  • Completion of departmental IV training and certification.
  • At least three years of relevant experience.
  • Proficiency in mathematical operations for inventory, record-keeping, and supply requests.
  • Ability to stand, walk, lift up to 40 lbs., and perform storage duties.
  • Effective communication skills to collaborate with medical and nursing staff.

Compensation

  • Pay Range: $19.85 - $28
  • Additional Compensation: Shift differentials, Up to $1200 Sign-On Bonus
