Job Description

General Summary

Under general supervision, fills orders for unit doses, pre-packaged pharmaceuticals, intravenous admixtures, controlled substances, floor stock, supplemental medications, emergency kits, and general stock. Maintains proper levels of pharmaceutical supplies, instruments, and equipment. Performs related pharmacy duties such as drug product recalls and pharmacy area inspections. Delivers and picks up medications and related items to and from patient care areas. Assists with training of less experienced technicians in their assigned areas.

Principal Responsibilities and Tasks

The following statements describe the general nature and level of work performed by personnel in this classification. They are not exhaustive of all duties.

  1. Assist in training new employees or those less familiar with their staffing area.
  2. Perform monthly medication expiration audits at satellite locations.
  3. Participate in safety audits and inspections in patient medication areas, assisting the Technical Coordinator as needed.
  4. Prepare and dispense medication orders for inpatient and outpatient populations, filling patient medications based on physician orders and patient profiles, in accordance with departmental procedures.
  5. Deliver and pick up pharmacy documents and medications across departments and care locations.
  6. Enter Admissions, Discharges, and Transfers (ADTs) into the computer system.
  7. Package and label medications into unit doses for pharmacist approval.
  8. Enter orders into the pharmacy computer system under pharmacist supervision, including TPN orders.
  9. Prepare sterile intravenous medications using proper aseptic techniques.
  10. Fill drug and supply requests as instructed by requestors and supervisors.
  11. Prepare and dispense controlled substances, maintain inventories, and coordinate returns to the DEA as appropriate.
  12. Document all vital information regarding DEA-controlled substances requests and perform random audits as per policy.

Return reusable medications and supplies appropriately.

Maintain inventory levels of medications and supplies, tracking stock and ensuring availability according to par levels.

  • Verify received supplies against purchase orders, store correctly, and report shortages.
  • Resolve discrepancies with vendors or escalate to purchasing.
  • Retrieve and properly dispose of expired medications and return controlled substances for disposal.
  • Complete scheduled pharmacy inventories.
  • Replenish floor stock and related medications in patient care areas.
  • Process medication recalls according to policy.

Ensure cleanliness and organization of the pharmacy, including proper shelving, removing cardboard, and maintaining a neat appearance.

Generate routine and requested reports from pharmacy databases.

Respond to telephone requests, providing excellent customer service and escalating issues as needed.

Adhere to departmental policies, safety, security, environmental, and infection control standards.

Assist in maintaining department equipment, performing routine maintenance, and ensuring proper functioning of refrigerators and other equipment.

Participate in interviewing and training new employees.

Attend training sessions for professional growth.

Follow assigned duties and checklists, and perform related duties as required.
