Job summary

UNC Health Rex is seeking a Certified Pharmacy Technician to perform sterile compounding under supervision of a licensed pharmacist. The role includes sterile prep, distribution duties, inventory management, and supporting training and process improvements.

Hours rotate days/evenings/weekends, with a paid incentive program for commitment. Qualifications include NC Board of Pharmacy registration or Pharmacy Intern status if enrolled, and a preferred completion of an academic technician program.

Qualifications

  • Prior pharmacy technician experience preferred.
  • Sterile compounding experience preferred.
  • Registration with NC Board of Pharmacy required unless in PharmD program.

Responsibilities

  • Fulfills medication and supply orders for hospitals and clinics within the health-system.
  • Conducts sterile compounding of medication batches.
  • Coordinates shipments to hospitals/clinics with couriers and maintains temperature control.
  • Documents distribution activities using automated and paper systems and ensures data accuracy.
  • Responds to and triages requests from customers for distribution or compounding services.
  • Uses automated dispensing technology to fulfill medication orders.
  • Receives, restocks, rotates inventory, and manages expiration dates.
  • Assists with training of new employees on job-specific functions.
  • Contributes to process improvement projects.
  • Participates in regulatory inspections of storage areas and related documentation.

Summary:

The Certified Pharmacy Technician’s primary duties will include sterile compounding of category 2 and category 3 products under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist. Additionally, this position will be part of the clean room sterilization team with a minimum requirement of 3 cleans per month.

Working hours will rotate between days, evenings, and weekends.

This position qualifies for our Pharmacy Technician Incentive Program, which includes $5000 in commitment incentives spread over a two-year period. Payment is made after six months, one year, and two years of employment.

Responsibilities:

1. Fulfills medication and supply orders for distribution to hospitals and clinics within and/or affiliated with the health-system.

2. Conducts strile compounding of medication batches.

3. Coordinates shipments to hospitals and clinics with multiple couriers and shipment pathways and ensures compliance with temperature requirements (i.e., cold chain, room temperature).

4. Documents pharmaceutical distribution activities for medications and equipment, quality control requirements, etc. using automated and paper systems. Ensures accuracy of data.

5. Responds to and triages requests from customers for assistance with pharmacy distribution or compounding services.

6. Utilizes automated dispensing technology and associated software to fulfill medication orders.

7. Receives, restocks, and rotates inventory, and completes expiration date management.

8. Assists with training of new employees, educating them in job-specific functions.

9. Contributes to process improvement projects.

10. Participates in regulatory compliance inspection of medication storage areas, including inspections and/or controlled substance inventories, USP <797> (2023) and other regulatory documentation as required.

Education Requirements:
None required as long as other position qualifications are met. Completion of an academic pharmacy technician training program preferred. Current enrollment in PharmD program if working as a registered pharmacy intern with NC Board of Pharmacy.
Licensure/Certification Requirements:
Registration as a technician with the NC Board of Pharmacy unless enrolled in a PharmD program. If currently enrolled, an NCBOP Pharmacy Intern registration may be accepted.
CPhT from PTCB or ExCPT from NHA unless enrolled in a PharmD program; if enrolled, this can be waived for the duration of the PharmD program.
Professional Experience Requirements:

  • Prior pharmacy technician experience is preferred.
  • Sterile compounding experience is preferred
Knowledge/Skills/and Abilities Requirements:
  • Requires standing and walking for extended periods (most of an 8-hour shift).
  • Must be able to lift at least 40 pounds repeatedly throughout the shift.
  • Must be able to reach over head to access shelved product or for cleaning.
