Job summary

Bay Pines VA Healthcare System is seeking a Medical Record Technician (Coder Inpatient) MRT to classify medical data from patient records in inpatient settings. The role supports accurate coding across hospital and physician-based environments within the HIM section of BPVAHCS.

The MRT coder will work under GS-0675 series guidelines, applying ICD-CM, PCS, CPT, and HCPCS coding conventions while maintaining privacy and regulatory compliance.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, and disease processes.
• Experience in medical coding and health record documentation.
• Eligibility for coding certification or equivalent credentials.

Responsibilities

• Assigns codes to inpatient encounters using ICD-CM, PCS, CPT and HCPCS as applicable.
• Reviews health records to ensure documentation supports codes for accuracy and compliance.
• Maintains proficiency with coding guidelines and regulatory requirements.
• Uses health information software and standard office tools to support coding workflows.
• Collaborates with clinical staff to resolve coding and documentation issues.
