Job summary

George Washington University Hospital in downtown Washington, DC, is seeking a compassionate Lactation Consultant to support new and expectant parents in achieving breastfeeding goals within inpatient settings.

The ideal candidate will provide expert education, hands-on assistance, and collaborative care with obstetricians, pediatricians, nurses, and dietitians to promote optimal infant nutrition and breastfeeding success.

Qualifications

• BSN degree required.
• IBCLC certification required.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and adapt to changing priorities.

Responsibilities

• Provide individualized lactation consultations to patients in hospitals, clinics, or home settings.
• Assess and address breastfeeding challenges such as latch issues, milk supply, nipple pain, and infant weight gain.
• Educate families on breastfeeding techniques, pumping, milk storage, and feeding plans.
• Collaborate with obstetricians, pediatricians, nurses, and dietitians to ensure coordinated care.
• Document patient interactions and progress in medical records.
• Lead breastfeeding classes and support groups as needed.
• Stay current with best practices and research in lactation and maternal‑child health.
• Advocate for breastfeeding‑friendly policies and environments within the organization.
