Job summary

WSP USA is seeking a Packaging & Material Handling Systems Designer to support our Facilities and Industrial Systems practice. This role is ideal for an experienced designer who can deliver high-quality packaging system designs from concept through construction, across multiple office locations including Minneapolis.

You will lead CAD work, layouts, PFDs and P&IDs, mentor junior designers, collaborate with engineers and clients, and contribute to project execution and site visits.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• 3+ years of packaging systems, material handling, or industrial facilities design experience.
• Strong communication skills with clients and stakeholders.
• Experience with AutoCAD (2D/3D); Inventor or similar 3D tools.
• Ability to interpret scan data and point clouds.
• Understanding of manufacturing, food & beverage, or equipment environments.
• Willingness to travel ~10–30%.

Responsibilities

• Support the design and development of packaging and material handling systems, including conveyors, layouts, and equipment integration.
• Produce and review CAD and 2D/3D design deliverables; develop building layouts, PFDs, P&IDs, and bid/ construction packages.
• Perform mass balances, conveyor calculations, layouts, and related technical documentation.
• Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior designers and drafters; delegate tasks and ensure quality.
• Support project execution: scope, schedule adherence, and PM coordination.
• Lead and participate in site visits for data collection and verification.
• Present design deliverables to clients in virtual and in-person settings.
• Collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams, clients, vendors, and contractors.
• Apply constructability, safety, and operational considerations throughout design.
