Job summary

The Columbus Consolidated Government is seeking a dedicated Correctional Detail Officer to supervise inmates at work sites and ensure adherence to department policies. Responsibilities include inmate transport, counts, searches for contraband, and administering first aid where needed. Applicants should have a high school diploma or equivalent, and possess or obtain P.O.S.T.

certification within six months. A valid driver’s license is required; CDL preferred.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent; completion of specialized training in the field is typical.
• Sufficient experience to understand major duties, usually via apprenticeship/internship or 1–2 years in a similar role.
• Must pass P.O.S.T. certification within the department's required time frame (usually six months).
• Must possess a valid driver’s license; Commercial Driver’s License is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Plans and supervises inmate work sites and reports concerns to a supervisor.
• Maintains daily incident and activity reports; ensures compliance with policies.
• Mows rights-of-way, assists forestry tasks, and tracks tools and equipment inventories.
• Trains inmates, assigns work, and makes recommendations on job suitability.
• Ensures inmates wear proper safety equipment and inspects vans and equipment for safe operation.
• Attends training seminars to upgrade skills (self-defense, firearms, first aid, CPR).
• Marks planting locations and checks utility lines; supervises tree planting techniques.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.
