Job summary

The Richmond City Sheriff’s Office seeks a Librarian to oversee the inmate library at the Richmond City Justice Center. A Master’s in Library Science and three years of librarian experience are required; CJ environment experience is preferred. Proficiency with Word, Excel and Outlook is expected to support daily operations and reporting.

The role includes library management, budgeting, and providing inmate assistance, with duties expanding to historical archiving and policy communication.

Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Library Science.
  • Three years of experience as a librarian.
  • Preferred experience as librarian in a criminal justice environment.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain the inmate library in accordance with standards and SOPs.
  • Ensure library is stocked with current periodicals and books (min 200 books, 100 magazines).
  • Assist inmates with checking out materials and completing letters/forms.
  • Maintain logs of visits to POD areas needing library services.
  • Manage the computerized inmate check out/return system and overdue notices.
  • Prepare monthly patron/usage and budget reports for the Major of Services.
  • Act as Historian by maintaining a Richmond City Justice Center scrapbook.
  • Maintain a monthly operating budget of $500 and submit receipts.
  • Explain new policies to inmates and the general public monthly.
  • Initiate daily attendance sheets.
  • Review eligibility of pre-trial offenders for library use for cases/trials.
  • Carry out other duties as directed by the Major of Services or Sheriff.
