Position Overview
This position will provide education, support, and safety items to prevent unintentional injuries of children at WVU Medicine Children's. Responsibilities include assessing the safety and educational needs of children and their families, planning and implementing safety interventions, and assisting in maintaining the Injury Prevention and Safety Program at WVU Children's Hospital/Jon Michael Moore Trauma Center. The role also involves promoting childhood safety and injury prevention through participation in community events.
Minimum Qualifications
- Education, Certification, and/or Licensure:
- Bachelor's Degree in health-related or social services field; OR Associate's Degree with two (2) years' experience in child safety education.
- Valid driver's license.
- Child Passenger Safety Technician (CPST) certification within 90 days of hire.
Preferred Qualifications
- Special Needs Training Certification.
Core Duties and Responsibilities
The following are general responsibilities; other duties may be assigned:
- Provide services aligned with the mission and vision of Children's Hospital.
- Assess child passenger safety and safe sleep environment following birth or NICU/PICU/6SE/6E stay; implement safety measures as needed.
- Inspect car seats, assess infants and medical conditions, and recommend or provide appropriate car seats if necessary.
- Educate caregivers on proper use of car seats as per manufacturer guidelines, AAP, Safe Kids, and NHTSA.
- Provide safe sleep education and assist with sleep environment safety as needed.
- Position and assess infants in car seats for angle tolerance testing; collaborate with medical team if concerns arise.
- Educate caregivers on safety topics: child passenger safety, safe sleep, home childproofing, and other injury prevention topics.
- Follow best practice guidelines from relevant authorities for injury prevention.
- Deliver high-quality, family-centered care and services.
- Assess children and select proper loaner restraints following injuries or surgeries.
- Manage distribution and tracking of loaned equipment.
- Assess safety needs of hospitalized children and implement safety measures.
- Develop safety education packets for common childhood injuries.
- Teach safety topics during childbirth and hospital discharge classes.
- Collaborate with community partners for events and family assistance programs.
- Serve as a community education resource and injury prevention expert.
- Engage in professional development and maintain competencies.
- Collect and analyze statistical data.
- Evaluate departmental activities and recommend improvements.
- Manage program expenditures within budget.
- Conduct needs assessments and program evaluations.
- Apply evidence-based injury prevention interventions in interactions.
Physical Requirements
- Heavy work involving strength, stamina, lifting up to 50 lbs, and physical assistance with children.
- Ability to work closely with others and around infectious diseases.
- Ability to work outdoors and in community settings; valid driver's license required.
- Overnight and weekend work may be required.

Skills and Abilities
- Mastery of current best practices in injury prevention and child passenger safety.
- Training in Safe to Sleep and Period of Purple Crying initiatives.
- Knowledge of child safety restraints and seat belt systems.
- Excellent communication skills for education and collaboration.
- Knowledge of risk factors for abuse and neglect, and ability to recognize warning signs and coordinate reporting.
- Knowledge of specialized restraints such as hip seats, car beds, and vests.
