Qualifications

Job Description

The Infusion Center Pharmacy Technician operates under the direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist to process, prepare, and manage medications requiring specialized handling, preparation, and strict accountability measures. This position demands expertise in the safe and compliant handling of high-risk pharmaceutical agents and maintains critical responsibility for medication accuracy, patient safety, and regulatory compliance.

  • Process medication orders with precision, ensuring adherence to established protocols and regulatory requirements for controlled and specialized pharmaceutical agents
  • Prepare medications requiring special handling and preparation, including cytotoxic agents, investigational drugs, and other high-risk pharmaceuticals, maintaining strict aseptic technique in controlled environments
  • Maintain comprehensive and accurate records of all medication transactions, investigational drug research documentation, and accountability measures in compliance with state and federal regulations
  • Validate prescribed doses against investigational drug protocols and established clinical guidelines, consulting with supervising pharmacists to ensure therapeutic appropriateness
  • Manage pharmacy inventory with accountability, including receipt, storage, maintenance, and secure transport of medications to designated nursing units
  • Demonstrate proficiency in computer systems and pharmacy management software to support order processing, record-keeping, and inventory control functions
  • Interpret and apply pharmaceutical literature and clinical protocols to support the development and modification of departmental procedures for specialized medication handling
  • Maintain compliance with all state pharmacy regulations, institutional policies, and safety standards governing the preparation and distribution of controlled and specialized medications
Qualifications

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

  • Requires a high school diploma or G.E.D. Requires a valid Pharmacy Technician license from the State of Michigan.
  • Requires at least one year of experience as a Hospital Pharmacy Technician and/or Retail Pharmacy Technician (retail experience applies only to medication history positions.
  • Requires the ability to maintain records and perform calculations.
  • Must have the ability to safely handle and manipulate cytotoxic and other special drugs and incidental equipment used in drug preparation, including the ability to work aseptically in a vertical flow hood environment.
  • Must have the ability, when applicable, to maintain Investigational Drug Research Records and to validate doses ordered using Investigational Drug Protocols.
  • Must have the ability to maintain (lift, carry, stock) pharmacy inventory and deliver prescriptions (transport) to nursing units.
  • Must have the ability to use a computer keyboard and type approximately 25 WPM.
  • Must be able to read, interpret and utilize literature relating to medications that require special handling, preparation or accountability to develop or modify, in consultation with a supervising pharmacist, departmental protocols pertaining to the use of these agents.
