This position requires a highly skilled Pharmacy Technician to work under the direct supervision of a pharmacist in the Cancer Pavilion, where precision and accountability are paramount. The Advanced Pharmacy Technician is responsible for the accurate processing, preparation, and handling of specialized oncology medications that demand rigorous safety protocols and meticulous attention to detail. The technician must demonstrate advanced expertise in the safe handling, preparation, and accountability of high-risk pharmaceutical agents, maintaining the highest standards of pharmaceutical practice and patient safety at all times.

  • Process and prepare specialized medications requiring enhanced safety protocols, special handling procedures, and strict accountability measures
  • Maintain and demonstrate advanced technical expertise in the safe handling and preparation of oncology and other specialized pharmaceutical agents
  • Execute all pharmacy operations with precision and accuracy, ensuring full compliance with regulatory requirements and institutional standards
  • Safely handle and manipulate cytotoxic and specialized drugs, demonstrating proficiency in aseptic technique within a vertical flow hood environment
  • Maintain comprehensive and accurate Investigational Drug Research Records and validate prescribed doses against established Investigational Drug Protocols
  • Manage pharmacy inventory with accountability, including receiving, stocking, and organizing specialized medications
  • Transport prescriptions and medications to nursing units in a timely and secure manner
  • Interpret and apply pharmaceutical literature and protocols related to specialized medications to develop and refine departmental procedures in consultation with supervising pharmacists
  • Maintain meticulous records and perform complex pharmaceutical calculations with absolute accuracy
  • Operate pharmacy computer systems and related equipment with proficiency and reliability

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

  • Requires a high school diploma or G.E.D. Requires a valid Pharmacy Technician license from the State of Michigan.
  • Requires at least one year of experience as a Hospital Pharmacy Technician and/or Retail Pharmacy Technician (retail experience applies only to medication history positions.
  • Requires the ability to maintain records and perform calculations.
  • Must have the ability, when applicable, to safely handle and manipulate cytotoxic and other special drugs and incidental equipment used in drug preparation, including the ability to work aseptically in a vertical flow hood environment.
  • Must have the ability, when applicable, to maintain Investigational Drug Research Records and to validate doses ordered using Investigational Drug Protocols.
  • Must have the ability to maintain (lift, carry, stock) pharmacy inventory and deliver prescriptions (transport) to nursing units. Must have the ability to use a computer keyboard and type approximately 25 WPM.
  • Must be able to read, interpret and utilize literature relating to medications that require special handling, preparation or accountability to develop or modify, in consultation with a supervising pharmacist, departmental protocols pertaining to the use of these agents.
