Job summary

HNTB is seeking a Construction Field Specialist for senior field inspection work on large infrastructure projects in the Los Angeles area, with opportunities in Norwalk. You will monitor contractor activities for compliance with plans and specifications, interface with client and staff, and support project resolution of issues.

The role involves on-site verification, effort estimates, and collaboration with project teams to ensure conformance to contract requirements.

Qualifications

  • Associate’s degree in Engineering, Construction Services or related field with 12 years of relevant experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Construction Services or related field with 10 years of relevant experience.
  • In lieu of degree, 14 years of relevant experience.

Responsibilities

  • Inspects, observes, documents, and verifies work in progress to ensure compliance with schedule, contract documents, and plans.
  • Advises Contractor superintendent or Project Manager of necessary actions to ensure conformance with plan, specs, and contract.
  • Utilizes engineering inspection practices for calculations, constructability and biddability reviews, and measurements of completed work.
  • Reviews and checks calculations for Inspector’s daily report.
  • Performs on-site material testing and produces as-constructed sketches.
  • Maintains as-built record drawings and leads project progress meetings.
  • Performs contract close-out documentation and change order management.
  • Serves as field technical SME and may mentor staff.

This opportunity entails being responsible for senior proficiency level inspection or construction field work to monitor compliance with engineering/architectural plans and specifications. The Construction Field Specialist supervises the work of project staff to determine that contractor’s construction activities are monitored and controlled in accordance with design specifications and contractual requirements. May serve as interface on-site between Client, Company Personnel and Contractor in resolution of project issues. May be responsible for project tasks under a Resident Engineer or serving as the assistant to the Resident Engineer on a large and/or complex Project.

What You’ll Do:
  • Inspects, observes, documents, and verifies work in progress by the construction contractor to ensure compliance with project schedule, contract documents, and plans. Confirms procedures are followed and material used conforms to specifications.
  • Advises Contractor superintendent or Project Manager of necessary actions to ensure conformance with plan, specs, and contract. Reviews and resolves quantity disputes with contractor.
  • Utilizes engineering inspection practices to perform sophisticated and complicated mathematical calculations, constructability and biddability reviews, and measurements of completed work to date.
  • Reviews and checks calculations for Inspector’s daily report of assigned work activities, contractor labor and equipment, quantity of material received and verified.
  • Performs on-site material testing and produces as-constructed sketches.
  • Leverages relationships with peers for project discovery and talent acquisition.
  • Maintains as-built record drawings.
  • Performs contract close-out documentation.
  • Performs construction schedule reviews, contractor pay estimate reviews, and change order management.
  • Prepares and leads project progress meetings.
  • Serves as field technical subject matter expert.
  • May lead daily assignments, mentor, and train employees.
  • Partners with client and acts as liaison between the field and office.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
What You’ll Need:
  • Associate’s degree in Engineering, Construction Services, or related field and 12 years relevant experience, or
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Construction Services or related field and 10 years of relevant experience, or
  • In lieu of degree, 14 years of relevant experience
What You’ll Bring:
  • Experience with bridge widenings, retaining walls, CIDH piles, driven piles, sound walls, ground anchor walls, construction.
  • Ability to work nights, and weekends.
  • Experience with Caltrans Standards, including but limited to Standard Plans & Specifications, Structure Construction manuals.
  • Ability to interpret contract plans and specifications.
  • Recognizes change conditions and proactive with the development of solutions.
What We Prefer:
  • Experience working on Caltrans projects.

Pay Range:

The approximate pay range for Los Angeles Metro Area and Orange County, CA is $145,993.46 - $228,348.77. The approximate nationwide pay range for this position is $126,950.84 - $248,205.18.
