GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The Infrastructure & Building Maintenance Laborer performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled maintenance, construction, repair, and labor activities in support of the City’s Public Works operations. This position carries out the maintenance and repair of City infrastructure, roads, sidewalks, rights-of-way, buildings, parks, and other public facilities; operates hand tools, power tools, vehicles, and maintenance equipment; and responds to routine and emergency maintenance needs, including weather-related events. The work requires a strong commitment to safety, teamwork, quality workmanship, and responsive service to the community.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Performs routine and preventive maintenance, repair, construction, and improvement of City streets, sidewalks, curbs, crosswalks, parking lots, rights-of-way, walkways, trails, drainage features, buildings, grounds, and other public infrastructure.
  • Operates and safely uses a variety of hand tools, power tools, vehicles, and maintenance equipment, including loaders/backhoes, paint stripers, concrete saws, snow plows, salt spreaders, and other assigned equipment.
  • Performs asphalt, concrete, excavation, grading, drainage, and related infrastructure maintenance and repair activities.
  • Assists with the installation, repair, replacement, and maintenance of PVC piping, traffic signs, fencing, playground components, and other infrastructure and site improvements.
  • Performs building maintenance and repairs, including painting, carpentry, drywall installation and repair, minor plumbing, and other general facility maintenance tasks.
  • Performs grounds, right-of-way, trail, and site maintenance, including vegetation and stump removal, debris removal, clearing, and other activities necessary to maintain safe and accessible public areas.
  • Responds to service requests and maintenance concerns and takes appropriate action to address identified problems or conditions.
  • Participates in emergency and severe weather operations, including clearing debris and maintaining access to emergency routes, bridges, rights-of-way, streets, sidewalks, and parking areas; operates snow plows and salt spreaders as assigned.
  • Conducts daily inspections of assigned vehicles, equipment, and tools; identifies and reports mechanical, safety, or operational concerns; and ensures equipment and supplies are properly maintained and stored.
  • Maintains accurate records and completes basic documentation, data entry, and electronic communications related to assigned work.
  • Responds appropriately to direction and supervision and demonstrates the ability to work independently when assigned.
  • Perform other job duties as assigned.

Qualifications

MINIMUM EDUATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • One (1) year of experience performing maintenance, construction, building maintenance, public works, grounds maintenance, equipment operation, or closely related work; OR
  • Any combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the position.
  • Knowledge of basic computer skills/data entry; must be able to read, write and send emails; excellent verbal and written communication.
CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES REQUIREMENTs
  • A valid driver's license in good standing.
  • Heavy Equipment Certification is desirable.
  • OSHA or other applicable safety training is desirable.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement. Performs light to heavy work. Requires strenuous physical work; heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling may be required of objects over 50 pounds. Skilled in the operation of hand tools, power tools and light or heavy maintenance equipment.

Unavoidable hazards refer to the job conditions that may lead to injury or health hazards even though precautions have been taken. Work assignments are performed primarily outdoors, where the employee may be exposed to unusual elements, such as moving machinery, extreme hot or cold temperatures, toxic chemicals, biohazardous materials, dirt, dust, debris, smoke, fumes and/or loud noises.
