Job summary

Cravath, Swaine & Moore LLP in New York seeks an Information Governance Manager to develop and implement firm-wide governance strategies. The role ensures proper classification, protection, retention, and disposition of firm and client information while driving compliance with legal and regulatory requirements.

You will lead governance programs, collaborate with lawyers and staff, and promote iManage adoption, with a focus on reducing risk and maximizing information value.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Management, Library Science, or related field.
  • Advanced degree or professional certifications (e.g., IGP, CIP, CRM, CIPP) are highly desirable.
  • A minimum of 8 years records management, information governance, compliance, security or related experience, including 2–3 years supervisory or lead experience.
  • Minimum 3 years delivering process, operational, technical improvements to address gaps, risks, and inefficiencies.
  • Hands-on experience with electronic records management systems (e.g., IRM) and document management platforms (e.g., iManage).
  • Background in professional services or legal environments preferred; strong policy writing skills.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement and manage the Firm's information governance strategy and program.
  • Advise on lifecycle management of client and administrative records.
  • Collaborate with administration, practice groups, and technology teams to improve compliance and lifecycle management;
  • Lead changes management, training and communications for policy adoption.
  • Champion use of iManage and related information management technologies.
  • Provide guidance to lawyers and staff on governance practices and information management solutions.
  • Promote effectiveness of access controls, retention and disposition workflows.
  • Identify information governance risks and coordinate with IT, OGC and stakeholders to mitigate them.
  • Support legal holds, investigations, and regulatory matters with governance requirements.
  • Track KPIs and prepare executive reporting on governance program effectiveness.

Job description

OVERVIEW

The Information Governance Manager helps to develop and implement the Firm's information governance strategy, policies, and best practices. The role collaborates with stakeholders across the Firm to enhance information management processes, ensuring the appropriate classification, access, protection, retention, and disposition of Firm and client information. The Information Governance Manager also evaluates compliance with legal, regulatory, ethical, contractual, and operational requirements, recommending improvements to strengthen governance, reduce risk, and maximize the value of the Firm's information assets.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Partners with the Associate Director of Records & Information Governance to develop, implement and manage the Firm's information governance strategy and program, including day-to-day execution, issue triage, prioritization, and the application of leading practices and methodologies to support the effective management of firm and client information;
  • Advises on operational and compliance responsibilities related to the lifecycle management of client and administrative records;
  • Collaborates with Firm administration, practice groups, and technology teams to identify information governance requirements and support the design and implementation of solutions that improve compliance, efficiency, and information lifecycle management;
  • Leads changes management, training and communication initiatives that promote adoption of information governance policies, processes and technologies;
  • Serves as a champion for effective use of iManage and related information management technologies, partnering with application owners to promote adoption, enhance governance capabilities, and support continuous improvement initiatives;
  • Provides guidance and consultative support to lawyers and administration professionals on information governance practices and information management solutions;
  • Partners with responsible departments to promote the effectiveness of information governance controls, including access restrictions, ethical walls, retention enforcement, and disposition workflows, ensuring alignment with Firm policies and risk management;
  • Identifies and assesses information governance risks, including access control failures, misconfigurations, and process breakdowns, in coordination with IT, OGC, and other stakeholders;
  • Recommends and promotes information governance requirements, processes, and best practices that enhance the effectiveness of iManage and related information technology technologies;
  • Advises stakeholders on relevant information governance requirements to comply with confidential information, ethical screens, and information access controls;
  • Partners with the Office of General Counsel and other stakeholders to support requirements associated with legal holds, investigations, and regulatory matters;
  • Tracks key performance indicators and prepare executive-level reporting for the Associate Director and firm leadership to assess the effectiveness of the Firm’s information governance program and identify opportunities for continuous improvement; and
  • Performs other duties, as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Management, Library Science, or related field;
  • Advanced degree or professional certifications (e.g., IGP, CIP, CRM, CIPP) are highly desirable;
  • A minimum of 8 years records management, information governance, compliance, security or related experience, including at least 2 – 3 years of supervisory or lead experience. Alternatively, a combination of education and experience that demonstrates equivalent expertise;
  • A minimum of 3 years of hands‑on experience delivering process, operational, technical improvements to address process gaps, mitigate risks, and eliminate inefficiencies with how information is acquired, used, stored, retained and disposed;
  • Hands‑on experience with electronic records management systems (e.g., IRM) and document management platforms (e.g., iManage); or demonstrated ability to quickly learn and administer comparable technologies;
  • Background in professional services or legal environments strongly preferred, with experience navigating complex information governance, compliance, and client requirements;
  • Proficient in technical writing and creation of policies, standards, procedures and guidelines;
  • Strong understanding of records management principles, operations, policies and compliance requirements, with the ability to adapt them to evolving technologies and practices;
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze complex situations, anticipate challenges, evaluate solutions and implement innovative, practical approaches;
  • Comfort with leveraging technology platforms to manage records, analyze data and support information governance objectives;
  • Strong understanding of data privacy and IT security control methodologies;
  • Strong aptitude for information technology to understand and effectively address evolving needs related to electronic records management;
  • Proven ability to develop, document and implement procedures that reinforce records management policies and guidelines;
  • Strong organizational and leadership skills, with experience guiding cross‑functional teams, managing projects through completion, and driving adoption of new tools and processes;
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills;
  • Ability to engage and build trust with attorneys, staff and stakeholders at all levels;
  • Ability to thrive in a dynamic environment, balancing multiple priorities with accuracy, adaptability and attention to detail;
  • Strong team player who also takes initiative and ownership of independent work; and
  • Availability to work additional hours, as needed.

This position is located in our New York office, and currently has a hybrid work schedule, which is subject to change. The estimated salary range for this position is $140,000 to $165,000. The actual salary offered will be based on a wide range of factors, including relevant skills, training, experience, education, and where applicable, licensure or certification obtained.
