Job summary

Care New England is seeking an Infection Preventionist to lead the hospital-wide program for preventing healthcare-associated infections in Rhode Island. You will conduct daily surveillance, review laboratory data, educate staff, and collaborate with Occupational Health to manage exposures.

The role requires a nursing background with RI RN licensure (or eligibility), strong data skills, and a CIC that you should pursue within two years.

Qualifications

• 5–7 years healthcare experience preferred; infection prevention experience required.
• Rhode Island RN licensure required for nursing degree holders.
• CIC certification highly preferred and encouraged to obtain within two years.
• Advanced knowledge of aseptic techniques and infection prevention practices.
• Knowledge of hospital nursing practices, surgical nursing, medical terminology, and applied math related to infection prevention.
• Proficient in computers and Microsoft Office programs.
• Skilled in data collection and management.
• Commitment to continuing education and professional development.
• Effective verbal and written communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Reviews daily admissions list for infections or nosocomial indicators.
• Reviews microbiology/lab reports daily and enters information in the system.
• Conducts patient surveillance rounds on nursing units.
• Performs retrospective chart reviews for healthcare‑associated infections.
• Provides input and education on infection prevention to staff.
• Consults with physicians and/or nursing staff regarding patient infections.
• Reports infectious disease cases to RI Department of Health.
• Supports regulatory readiness activities for Joint Commission, state health, and CMS.
• Collaborates with Occupational Health for infection investigations and exposures.
• Investigates suspected outbreaks and manages exposure control.
• Develops, reviews, and implements infection prevention policies and procedures.
• Analyzes trends to identify infection prevention risks and opportunities.
• Performs Infection Control Risk Assessments for construction and maintenance projects.
