Job summary

Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD is seeking a Neonatal Nutrition Technician to join our NICU team on a full-time day/evening schedule. You will prepare, handle, store and distribute neonatal feedings including mother's milk, donor milk, and formula, while documenting in EMR and verifying orders to ensure patient safety.

The role requires strict aseptic technique, adherence to regulatory guidelines, and routine sanitation.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) licensure preferred.
• ServSafe Certification recommended.
• Experience in healthcare or clinical food service preferred.

Responsibilities

• Prepares neonatal feedings according to provider orders and formulations.
• Verifies patient identifiers, feeding orders, volumes, caloric density and additives.
• Labels prepared feedings with patient identifiers and expiration dates.
• Safely handles, stores, thaws, and distributes mother’s milk, donor milk, and formula.
• Uses EMR/milk tracking systems to document preparation and manage records.
• Performs routine cleaning and sanitation of equipment and surfaces.
• Uses phones/computers to document orders and coordinate workflow.

A Brief Overview

Responsible for the safe, accurate and timely preparation, handling, storage, and distribution of all neonatal feedings including mother's own milk, donor human milk, formula, and prescribed fortifiers. This role operates within a controlled, high-reliability preparation environment and requires strict adherence to aseptic technique, standardized recipes, infection prevention practices, and regulatory guidelines. The technician ensures all feedings are prepared in alignment with provider orders while supporting efficient workflow and maintaining the highest standards of patient safety.

What you will do

• Prepares neonatal feedings in accordance with provider orders and standardized formulations. Accurately measures, mixes, and fortifies human milk and formula using approved techniques.
• Verifies patient identifiers, feeding orders, volumes, caloric density, and additives prior to preparation.
• Labels all prepared feedings accurately, including patient identifiers, contents, and expiration dating.
• Safely handles, stores, thaws, and distributes mother’s milk, donor human milk, and formula per established protocols including monitoring refrigerator and freezer temperatures and ensuring appropriate product rotation.
• Utilizes EMR and/or milk tracking systems to document preparation activities and maintain accurate records. Manages inventory of formula, fortifiers, donor milk, and preparation supplies.
• Performs routine cleaning and sanitation of equipment and surfaces in accordance with infection prevention standards.
• Effectively utilizes phones and/or mobile communication devices and computer systems to support documentation, order verification, and workflow coordination.

Preferred Education, License/Certification, or Work Experience

• High School or GED Equivalent
• Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) - Licensing Board
• ServSafe Certificate - National Restaurant Association
• Experience in healthcare, food service in a clinical setting, pharmacy technician, laboratory or NICU support role
