Job summary

Dow Jones & Company, Inc. in White Oak, Maryland seeks an Industrial Mechanic/Machinist to provide preventive maintenance and repair of production equipment. You will diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical issues, test repaired machinery, and ensure safe operation in a fast-paced print plant.

This on-site role requires lifting up to 35 pounds, reading blueprints, welding, and documenting repairs. Shifts rotate after 5pm, with weekend work as needed.

Qualifications

  • High school degree or equivalent or 1-3 years of equivalent experience in industrial/mechanical roles.
  • Knowledge of mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic and electrical systems and safe operation principles, including welding.
  • Ability to lift 35 pounds and stand for extended periods.
  • Capable of reading blueprints and keeping maintenance records.
  • Willingness to rotate shifts and work overtime as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Perform preventive maintenance on mechanical systems including disassembly, cleaning, reassembly and calibration.
  • Disassemble, inspect, repair, and reassemble machinery; test operation after maintenance.
  • Study manuals to ensure proper installation and operation of equipment.
  • Record parts used and repairs; request new parts as needed.
  • Maintain safe, clean, and organized work environment.
  • Communicate with supervisors and operators about potential mechanical hazards and maintenance priorities.
  • Rotate between shifts and coordinate with plant management to meet maintenance schedules.

About the Team:

The team is part of the Print Operations Department.

About the Role

The Industrial Mechanic/Machinist provides mechanic maintenance support to plant operations. The ability to perform work safely, meet the needs of operations, execute the maintenance program and comply with all safety codes is paramount. You will identify, troubleshoot and repair problems in mechanical systems that occur in production equipment. You will run tests, isolate problems, remove/replace failed components, determine failure modes by studying worn components and perform other tasks while also performing preventive maintenance and upgrades to mechanical systems. You will be based on-site at our White Oak, Maryland Print Plant reporting to the Machinist Foreman.

You Will:
  • Perform preventive maintenance on mechanical systems to include disassembly, cleaning, reassembly, and calibration. Act on information obtained from operators to diagnose equipment problems. Clean, lubricate, and adjust parts, equipment, and machinery.

  • Disassemble machinery and equipment to remove parts and make repairs. Examine parts for defects such as breakage and excessive wear. Observe and test the operation of machinery and equipment to diagnose malfunctions, using voltmeters and other testing devices. Operate newly repaired machinery and equipment to verify the adequacy of repairs. Reassemble equipment after completion of inspections, testing, or repairs. Repair and maintain the operating condition of industrial production machinery and equipment. Repair and replace broken or malfunctioning components of machinery and equipment.

  • Study blueprints and manufacturer manuals to determine correct installation and operation of machinery. Cut and weld metal to repair broken metal parts, fabricate new parts, and assemble new equipment. Test all repairs upon completion.

  • Record parts and materials used, and request new parts and materials. Record repairs and maintenance performed. Sometimes repair or modifications are performed when blueprints and manufacturer specifications are unavailable or incomplete.

  • Utilize safety and security practices and procedures following established rules and regulations and maintain a safe, clean, and secure work environment.

  • Communicate with management, mechanics, and equipment operators to advise them if there are any potential mechanical hazards. Execute the maintenance work schedule as provided by your supervisor. This will require strategic decisions to ensure the scheduled work will be completed within the period scheduled.

  • Keep the Foreman informed of all issues which may affect the operational capability of the equipment.

  • Ensure the shop is maintained in a safe and orderly fashion. Attend meetings and support continuous improvement initiatives.

  • Maintain close contact with the Foreman, maintenance crew, the production supervisors and equipment operators. Keep the maintenance supervisor and manager informed on all abnormal or critical situations and seek advice on matters outside of their knowledge or authority. Perform other tasks and special assignments as requested by management. Work with the production manager to set equipment maintenance priorities.

  • Rotate shifts as scheduled by the plant management. The primary production hours of the plant are after 5pm (second shift). This is a rotating shift between 1st and 2nd shift with other team members with some weekend work required.

You Have:
  • High school degree or equivalent or 1- 3 years of equivalent experience in industrial / commercial mechanics preferred.

  • Knowledge of basic mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical systems and safe machine operation principles including welding experience.

  • Capability of lifting press parts and making mechanical repairs.

  • Good math, mechanical, organizational, written and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to stand for extended periods, bend, stoop, reach, and lift 35-pounds.

  • An understanding of corporate and plant policies/practices while keeping accurate, useful operational and maintenance records
