Job description

Job Title: Industrial Hygienist

MPHI is a Michigan-based and nationally engaged, non-profit public health institute dedicated to building a world where tomorrow is healthier than today!

Salary Range: $56,659.20 - $90,750.40 / Posted Thru: 5/22/2025

Location: Remote/Virtual - Must Live and Work in Michigan

Purpose:

The Industrial Hygienist will assist state and local public health partners in preventing and investigating public health threats such as legionellosis and blastomycosis. Responsibilities include conducting environmental assessments, sampling, reviewing water management programs, and contributing to epidemiologic investigations. The position is within the Bureau of Infectious Disease Prevention's Emerging Infectious Diseases Division.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  1. Monitor disease surveillance systems for environmental health threats.
  2. Provide environmental health consultations regarding Legionella and other threats.
  3. Conduct environmental assessments at outbreak sites.
  4. Educate on prevention and control of environmental health threats.
  5. Evaluate policies and public health approaches.
  6. Coordinate investigation activities with other staff.
  7. Liaise with federal and state partners on monitoring activities.
  8. Prepare reports on monitoring and prevention activities.
  9. Participate in grant writing for disease prevention funding.
  10. Support state-level investigation and response efforts.
  11. Provide expertise and support to local health departments.
Qualifications/Requirements:
Education:

Bachelor's degree in physical sciences, biological sciences, public health, occupational safety or health, or engineering, with at least 20 semester credits in relevant areas.

Experience:

One to two years in occupational disease prevention, environmental health law enforcement, or threat investigation.

Skills and Characteristics:
  • Knowledge of industrial processes, water hygiene, and remediation protocols.
  • Understanding of industrial hygiene principles and workplace hazards.
  • Proficiency in environmental risk assessment of waterborne pathogens.
  • Ability to interpret data and prepare reports.
  • Competence in using environmental health testing equipment.
  • Strong communication skills for scientific reporting and presentations.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements:

Moderate physical effort, potential exposure to hazardous environments, and travel requirements. Standard office environment with some field investigations.

This position does not have responsibility for others' work but plays a vital role in public health threat investigation and response.
