Job summary

The City of Sacramento is seeking a journey-level Generator Technician to service and repair diesel and gaseous engines in municipal facilities.

Ideal candidates will safely perform routine inspections, troubleshoot engine control systems, and execute preventive maintenance on generators and ATS units to ensure reliable backup power. This role emphasizes safety, regulatory compliance, and hands-on mechanical expertise.

Qualifications

• Experience Troubleshooting and repairing IC engines and generators.
• Ability to interpret wiring schematics and diesel control circuits.
• Familiarity with exhaust aftertreatment systems.
• Knowledge of safety procedures and PPE.
• Strong documentation skills for maintenance records.

Responsibilities

• Assist and participate in routine inspections and modifications to IC engines, diesel generators, and associated equipment.
• Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on Automatic Transfer Switches (ATS) and annunciator panels.
• Conduct load testing on units to identify problems and prevent wet stacking.
• Test batteries, fuel, coolant, and oil; ship oil samples for analysis.
• Transport and dispose hazardous materials as required.
