Job summary

SMS group is seeking an Automation Engineer Intern in Pittsburgh, PA, to support Level 1 control systems design, programming, and testing for steelmaking facilities. You’ll work with experienced engineers on Electric Arc Furnaces, Continuous Casters, and Rolling Mills to translate process requirements into reliable automation solutions.

The role offers hands-on experience in HMI and PLC programming, system integration, and project-based learning in a globally connected industrial setting.

Qualifications

• Pursuing a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, Mechatronics, or related field.
• Foundational knowledge of PLCs and industrial automation.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to work independently while collaborating with multidisciplinary teams.
• Eagerness to learn and develop expertise in heavy industrial automation.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Proficiency with standard computer applications and engineering documentation.
• Interest in PLC programming, commissioning, troubleshooting, and system integration.

Responsibilities

• Assist in developing Level 1 control systems per project requirements and SMS standards.
• Translate equipment descriptions and process needs into PLC/automation solutions.
• Communicate with engineers and stakeholders on technical matters and interfaces.
• Participate in internal integration testing and system validation before shipment.
• Document lessons learned and contribute to reusable engineering solutions.
