A global publicly traded technology and manufacturing organization is seeking an experienced Indirect Tax Manager to join its corporate tax team. This highly visible leadership role offers the opportunity to oversee indirect tax operations across a complex, multi-state environment while driving tax technology initiatives, process improvements, and compliance excellence.
The successful candidate will partner closely with Finance, Accounting, IT, Operations, and executive leadership to support the company's growth, scalability, and evolving tax requirements.
Position Overview
Reporting to the Vice President of Tax, the Indirect Tax Manager will lead all aspects of U.S. indirect tax compliance, audits, technology optimization, and process improvement initiatives. This role will oversee internal team members and external advisors while serving as a key resource for indirect tax planning, risk management, and operational support.

Key Responsibilities
Indirect Tax Compliance & Operations
- Lead day-to-day indirect tax operations and compliance activities across U.S. jurisdictions
- Oversee sales and use tax, property tax, excise tax, business licenses, registrations, and reporting requirements
- Ensure timely and accurate filing, remittance, and compliance execution
- Manage relationships with external compliance providers and advisors
Audit & Controversy Management
- Lead indirect tax audits and examinations
- Manage communications with tax authorities and regulatory agencies
- Coordinate responses to notices, inquiries, and assessments
- Minimize tax exposure through proactive risk management and documentation practices
Strategic Tax Support
- Partner with business and finance leaders to assess tax implications of new initiatives, products, and operational changes
- Provide practical guidance on indirect tax risks and planning opportunities
- Monitor legislative and regulatory developments and communicate potential impacts to stakeholders
- Oversee tax engine functionality, taxability mapping, and system configuration
- Support implementation and optimization of tax technology solutions
- Identify opportunities for automation, enhanced reporting, and process efficiencies
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives focused on scalability, data quality, and compliance effectiveness
- Assist with implementation of tax engines, exemption certificate management tools, dashboards, and workflow solutions
Leadership & Team Development
- Lead, mentor, and develop indirect tax professionals
- Manage outside consultants, technology vendors, and service providers
- Foster a collaborative and high-performing team environment
- Coordinate cross-functional initiatives with Accounting, Finance, IT, Operations, and business leaders
Qualifications
Required Experience
- 8+ years of indirect tax experience within public accounting, industry, or a combination of both
- Experience working with complex, multi-state indirect tax environments
- Proven success managing indirect tax compliance and audit activities
- Experience leading tax-related projects and process improvements
Technical Expertise
- Strong knowledge of:
- Sales and use tax
- Property tax
- Business licensing and registrations
- U.S. indirect tax compliance requirements
- Understanding of U.S. GAAP accounting considerations related to indirect tax
- Experience with ERP systems and tax automation platforms
- Tax engine experience strongly preferred
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and research capabilities
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment
- Excellent communication and relationship-building abilities
- Experience working cross-functionally with diverse stakeholder groups
- Proven ability to manage external advisors and vendors effectively
Education
Required
- Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field
Preferred
- CPA or advanced tax/accounting credentials are a plus
