Job summary

Benhaven Academy in Connecticut seeks a Certified Health & Physical Education Teacher to provide adapted PE for students with high-functioning autism and related social‑emotional needs. The role reports to the Academy Director and runs Monday‑Friday, 8 am‑3:30 pm (37.5 hours) in a 12‑month exempt position.

You will develop and deliver health education aligned with state standards, promote wellness, manage sensitive health plans, and collaborate with teams to support student safety and growth in

Qualifications

  • Must be able to pass a variety of background checks.
  • Must be able to prepare lesson plans.
  • Maintain inventory of instructional equipment, materials, etc.
  • Must be able to work as part of a team in a person-centered supportive environment.

Responsibilities

  • Provide group instruction to students diagnosed with high-functioning autism spectrum disorder and challenges related to anxiety and social competence.
  • Promote physical fitness, health literacy, personal wellness, and healthy lifestyle choices.
  • Develop and deliver health education curriculum aligned with Connecticut State Standards (nutrition, personal wellness, mental health awareness, substance abuse prevention, personal safety, healthy decision‑making).
  • Adapt health and physical education instruction to meet individual learning, behavioral, social-emotional, and physical needs of students.
  • Collaborate with classroom teams to support students' health, safety, and wellness needs.
  • Maintain awareness of student medical conditions, allergies, physical limitations, and emergency health plans.
  • Implement accommodations and modifications in accordance with IEPs and behavioral plans.
  • Monitor student participation and physical well-being during activities; respond to health and safety concerns.
  • Promote lifelong healthy habits through instruction in physical fitness, nutrition, stress management, and personal wellness.
  • Ensure PE equipment and spaces are maintained in a safe, organized, and sanitary condition.
  • Participate in PPT meetings, multidisciplinary teams, and professional development.
  • Support school-wide initiatives related to student wellness and social-emotional learning.
