Jobbeschreibung

Practice Medicine the Way You Always Hoped You Would!

Heartstrings Pet Hospice is hiring In-Home Hospice and Euthanasia Veterinarians to serve pet families throughout Davis, West Sacramento & Sacramento, California & Surrounding Areas.

If you are a compassionate veterinarian looking for a career outside the traditional clinic environment - one with greater professional autonomy, meaningful relationships with pet families, and the time to practice veterinary medicine with intention - Heartstrings Pet Hospice offers a different way to practice.

No waiting room. No double-booked appointment columns. No corporate production dashboard. Just you, a family who loves their pet, and the time and space to provide compassionate end-of-life veterinary care the way you believe it should be provided.

At Heartstrings, our veterinarians provide in-home pet hospice, palliative care, quality-of-life support, and compassionate euthanasia services, helping families navigate one of the most difficult moments of pet ownership in the comfort and privacy of home.

Privately Held. Family-Owned. Doctor-Led.

Heartstrings Pet Hospice is a Privately held, Family-Owned and Doctor-Led Veterinary Practice. We are not a private-equity-owned veterinary group, and we believe veterinarians should have the professional autonomy to practice medicine while maintaining control over the direction of their careers.

And at Heartstrings, WE DO NOT USE VETERINARIAN NON-COMPETE AGREEMENTS.

Not a shortened non-compete.
Not a smaller geographic radius.
Not a so-called “reasonable” restriction.

None!

Your veterinary career should never be held hostage by a contract clause.

Unlike veterinary organizations that restrict where veterinarians can work after leaving, Heartstrings believes talented veterinary professionals should be free to build their careers on their own terms.

We want veterinarians to stay with Heartstrings because they Choose To Stay - because they value the work, the families they serve, their professional autonomy, and the quality of life this type of veterinary medicine can provide.

Your career belongs to you. We would simply like the opportunity to earn the right to be part of it.

If you are searching for a veterinarian job in Davis, Sacramento & West Sacramento, California & Surrounding area and want to explore a career in in-home pet hospice, palliative care, and euthanasia, we would welcome the opportunity to speak with you.

Compassion. Dignity. Respect.
That is what we promise pet families—and what we believe veterinary professionals deserve from the organization they choose to call home.

Who Thrives Here

The veterinarians who thrive at Heartstrings Pet Hospice are often the doctors who have always been especially good at the moments that matter most—the difficult conversations, supporting families through anticipatory grief, and providing compassionate end-of-life veterinary care with empathy, confidence, and clinical judgment.

If you have ever finished a euthanasia appointment and thought, “That was the most meaningful thing I did all week—I just wish I’d had another twenty minutes,” you already understand why veterinarians choose In-Home Pet Hospice and Euthanasia Care.

This role can be an especially meaningful career path for experienced general practice and emergency veterinarians who want to step away from the relentless pace of a traditional veterinary hospital or ER without stepping away from practicing medicine. Instead of crowded appointment schedules and competing demands, our veterinarians can focus on hospice, palliative care, quality-of-life support, pain and symptom management, and peaceful in-home euthanasia while helping families make informed, compassionate decisions for the pets they love.

We also genuinely welcome veterinarians returning to clinical practice, doctors seeking a flexible veterinary career, and veterinarians building a schedule around children, family, travel, or life outside of work.

You spent years becoming a veterinarian. You should not have to choose between practicing meaningful veterinary medicine and having a meaningful life outside of it.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities

As an In-Home Hospice and Euthanasia Veterinarian with Heartstrings Pet Hospice, you will provide compassionate, individualized veterinary care to pets and their families in the comfort and privacy of their homes.

  • Provide in-home pet hospice, palliative care, quality-of-life support, pain and symptom management, and compassionate euthanasia services within your assigned service area.
  • Independently travel to scheduled appointments and practice effectively in a mobile veterinary care environment outside of a traditional veterinary hospital or clinic.
  • Perform appropriate physical examinations, clinical assessments, medication administration, sedation, euthanasia, and other veterinary services within the scope of the position and applicable veterinary regulations.
  • Educate and guide pet families through quality-of-life decisions, end-of-life care options, the euthanasia process, and aftercare considerations with empathy and clear professional communication.
  • Maintain accurate, timely, and professional veterinary medical records and clinical documentation for each patient encounter.
  • Communicate professionally and collaboratively with pet families, the Heartstrings veterinary medical team, scheduling and support teams, and referring veterinary professionals.
  • Safely handle, position, and assist with the movement of companion animals during in-home veterinary appointments.
  • Maintain professionalism, clinical independence, sound medical judgment, and reliability while working independently in the field.
  • Consistently demonstrate Heartstrings' commitment to Compassion. Dignity. Respect. in every interaction with patients, families, colleagues, and veterinary partners.

Required Qualifications

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM), Veterinary Medical Doctor (VMD), BVMS, or equivalent veterinary medical degree from an accredited or otherwise qualifying veterinary program.
  • Hold, or be eligible to obtain, an active veterinary license in the state(s) where services will be provided.
  • Possess a valid U.S. driver's license and be able to safely travel between scheduled in-home veterinary appointments.
  • Comfortable working independently as a mobile veterinarian while remaining connected to and supported by the Heartstrings veterinary and operations teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate with empathy and professionalism, particularly during sensitive pet hospice, quality-of-life, and end-of-life conversations.
  • Availability to participate in rotational weekend scheduling as required by the position.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds unassisted and assist with weights up to 100 pounds, with reasonable accommodation where applicable.
  • Ability to perform the physical and logistical requirements associated with providing veterinary care in a variety of residential environments.
  • Successful completion of applicable background and motor vehicle record checks following hire and before the employee's scheduled start date.

Where Veterinarians Stay by Choice, Not by Contract.

At Heartstrings Pet Hospice, we believe veterinarians should have more than a meaningful career. They should have the Compensation, Flexibility, Professional Autonomy, Benefits, and Work-Life Balance to build a life they enjoy outside of veterinary medicine, too.

Competitive Compensation & Professional Autonomy
  • Competitive veterinarian compensation designed to recognize your experience, schedule, and contribution to the families you serve
  • Self-managed scheduling with greater control over your professional calendar and work-life balance
  • Supported by a dedicated Scheduling, Operations, and Veterinary Medical Team, allowing you to focus on practicing medicine and caring for families
  • Work for a privately held, Family-Owned and Doctor-Led Veterinary Practice

And the Benefit No Contract Can Give You Back

No Non-Compete Agreement. Your Career Stays Yours.

We believe veterinarians should have the freedom to determine where and how they practice medicine throughout their careers. We want you to build a career with Heartstrings because you choose to be here, not because a restrictive contract limits what you can do next.

At Heartstrings Pet Hospice, we believe in-home pet hospice, palliative care, and compassionate euthanasia are among the most meaningful services a veterinarian can provide.

If you are looking for a veterinary career with work-life balance, flexible scheduling, professional autonomy, competitive compensation, comprehensive benefits, and no non-compete agreement, we would welcome the opportunity to speak with you.
