Job summary

Community Access in New York City seeks an IMT Peer Specialist Intern as part of a multi-disciplinary mental health team. The intern uses lived experience to build trust, engage participants, and support recovery objectives within IMT programs across boroughs.

You will gain hands-on experience delivering trauma‑informed care, coordinating services, and learning assessment and documentation practices with supervision, with a clear path toward a permanent peer specialist role.

Qualifications

• New York Certified Peer Specialist (NYCPS) or provisional certification in progress.
• Lived experience of a mental health condition required, and history of homelessness or related involvement preferred.
• Available to work a flexible schedule including mornings, evenings and weekends.
• Must be able to work in the community using public transportation.
• Bilingual Spanish-speaking preferred.
• Fingerprint clearance by the New York State Justice Center required.

Responsibilities

• Understand and apply person-centered treatment planning.
• Identify participant needs and service plan objectives.
• Collaborate with shelters, hospitals, outpatient services and criminal justice systems.
• Provide employment counseling and housing support.
• Assist participants with navigating service systems, entitlements and transportation.
• Educate participants about coping strategies and WRAP plans or other supports.
• Provide harm reduction services, integrated substance use treatment and relapse prevention.
• Complete documentation that meets medical-necessity standards.
