Job summary

The City of Indianapolis and Marion County is seeking a park ranger to maintain safe parks, enforce laws, and respond to incidents across park properties. The role requires calm, tactful interaction with visitors and adherence to training and certification requirements.

Candidates must meet fitness and psychological evaluations, pass drug/background checks, and obtain a tier 2 LETB certification. In this role you will work with IMPD and park staff to protect the public and property.

Qualifications

• Must pass pre-employment physical, a psychological assessment and a functional fitness test (FFT).
• Incumbent must possess or obtain a tier 2 LETB certification in Indiana.
• U.S. citizenship is required.

Responsibilities

• Patrol parks in the assigned district to deter crime and safeguard park property.
• Respond to calls for service and incidents in park areas as they arise.
• Enforce park rules, regulations, and ordinances in a professional manner.
• Coordinate with IMPD and other agencies when needed and return to duty when safe.
• Maintain assigned equipment and represent Rangers positively in the community.
• Testify in court on park-related cases when required.

Job description

Position is responsible for maintaining safe parks, enforcing park rules, regulations, and ordinances, as well as local and state laws. Independent judgment is regularly utilized by park rangers when they respond to calls for service, as emergencies arise, or when they observe an issue requiring public safety intervention. This position requires someone who can remain calm in tense situations and utilize tact and diplomacy when interacting with people visiting our parks. Candidates must successfully pass a functional fitness test, a medical/psychological evaluation, and the training required to attain a tier 2 certification from the Indiana Law Enforcement Training Board.

• Safeguards parks property and report security shortcomings.
• Responds to requests for assistance from parks employees.
• Responds to requests for assistance from members of the public.
• Assists motorists in need.
• Investigates criminal activity in assigned parks.
• Accurately reports all criminal activity within assigned parks.
• Warns /Cites violators in parks.
• Reports maintenance issues on parks properties.
• Enforces traffic in and around parks when it impacts the safety of park patrons.

• Assist other law enforcement agencies when nearby, returning to duty when sufficient officers are on the scene to control the situation.
• Maintains assigned equipment in a timely manner.
• Represents Rangers & the IMPD in a positive manner.
• Performs security activities i.e. Pools, waterways, concerts, special details.
• Responds to alarms on park properties.
• Investigates suspicious activity on park properties.
• Conduct crash investigations on park property and/ or involving park dept. vehicles.
• Appears in court to testify on park related cases.
• Make notification to Sergeants or next ranking supervisor of any serious incidents, injuries to Rangers, accidents involving Rangers, or incidents with media involvement.

High School diploma or equivalent and Law Enforcement Training Board (LETB) tier 2 certification. Preferred candidates will have (2) years’ experience or education in law enforcement and / or natural resources. Must pass a pre-employment physical, a psychological assessment, and a functional fitness test (FFT). Upon hire, incumbent must possess at least a tier 2 certification from the Indiana Law Enforcement Training Board, or pass the training required to obtain a tier 2 certification at the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy. Must be able to obtain and maintain Special Police Powers and IDACS/NCIC certification. Ability to define and analyze problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw complex conclusions. Ability to direct, coordinate, and manage operations of complex functions and coordinate activities with other departmental divisions and outside agencies. Must pass a drug test and background check. Position requires random drug screens. Must be a citizen of the United States. Must possess a valid driver’s license from the state of Indiana and be able to operate public safety vehicle. Knowledge of law enforcement information systems; related criminal and civil law; Federal and State law, and City ordinances. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing independent judgment is regularly used when there are no policies or laws to cover situation Rangers become involved in.

Working Conditions

Work performed in office and field settings with travel between park properties required, with occasional exposure to dangerous individuals and emergency situations. Shift and weekend work is required. Work is conducted in various weather conditions and utilizing
