Job summary

GEAR UP College Mentor at CSUDH Toro Auxiliary Partners supports GEAR UP Coordinators and coaches in delivering services to students, including clubs, labs and workshops. The role focuses on mentoring, progress checks, and referrals to student support services within Centinela Valley high school district settings.

The position is part-time, non-benefited, with hours of 12–15 per week across at least 3 days and a typical schedule between 8 am and 4 pm; compensation is $20 per hour.

Qualifications

• Be an undergraduate student at CSUDH or another local college/university.
• Maintain good academic standing (+2.5 cumulative GPA).
• At least one year of experience working with high school students from underserved and underrepresented communities.
• Knowledge of higher education college systems and financial aid.
• Experience providing workshops about college options, admissions requirements, and application procedures.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Must be reliable and punctual.
• Must be able to handle confidential information with discretion.
• Must pass LiveScan fingerprinting provided by the program.
• Must have reliable transportation.

Responsibilities

• Support GEAR UP Program Coordinators and Student Success Coaches in implementing services for high school students.
• Support lunch-time College and Career Club, after-school Study Labs, and student success workshops.
• Conduct individual and group mentoring sessions to monitor progress and referrals.
• Assist with planning and implementing major events (e.g., National GEAR UP Week, College & Career Fairs, Campus Visits).
• Maintain student files, track participation, and conduct data entry in the student information system.
