The Minnesota Star Tribune is an innovative modern media organization building on an extraordinary 159-year legacy. With seven Pulitzer Prizes and numerous other accolades, we stand as a beacon of journalistic excellence in Minnesota. We are the heart and voice of the North.
Our mission is to build a better Minnesota by connecting us with the people, ideas, and stories that strengthen our communities. We’re seeking dynamic leaders who are passionate about journalism and democracy to help shape this future. If you are excited about reinventing one of our state’s most trusted institutions and leading us into a new era of growth and excellence, we want to hear from you.
We are seeking an ambitious Immigration Reporter at our headquarters in Minneapolis MN to own one of Minnesota’s most consequential and dynamic beats: immigration and the changing communities reshaping the state.
This person will play a central role in reporting the real-world impact of one of the country’s most divisive political and policy issues. Decisions made in Washington, at the State Capitol and by local governments can have immediate consequences for Minnesota families, workplaces, schools and communities.
We want a reporter who can operate on both fronts: break important news as immigration policy and enforcement change and produce distinctive enterprise journalism that helps readers understand what those changes mean.
This reporter will develop authoritative sourcing inside immigrant communities as well as among government officials, advocates, attorneys, employers, law enforcement and others shaping immigration policy and its consequences. The goal is journalism readers cannot get elsewhere — reporting that reveals what is happening, holds powerful institutions accountable and captures how immigration is changing Minnesota.
Enterprise on this beat should go well beyond profiles and stories about individual communities. We want reporting that identifies larger forces and important changes: how immigration is reshaping Minnesota’s workforce and economy; how federal policy is playing out here; how enforcement decisions affect communities; how newcomers are changing cities and institutions; and how political conflict over immigration is influencing Minnesota.
Success will be measured by the ability to break meaningful news, develop deep and diverse sources, produce ambitious and original enterprise journalism and make the Star Tribune an essential source for understanding immigration in Minnesota.
The reporter will work regularly from the Minnesota Star Tribune’s downtown Minneapolis headquarters.
Annual pay range for this A-scale position is $62,662.08 - $87,638.72, as established by thecontract of the Minnesota Newspaper and Communications Guild.
Compensation will depend on several factors, including a candidate’s qualifications, skills, competencies and experience, and may fall outside of the range shown.
The Minnesota Star Tribune offers a competitive total rewards package, which includes a 401(k) match, healthcare coverage — medical, dental and vision — life, disability, paid time off and a broad range of other benefits.
Even if you don't meet every single requirement for this role, we encourage you to apply. At The Minnesota Star Tribune, we are dedicated to building a diverse and inclusive workplace and welcome applicants from all backgrounds.
