Job description

The Minnesota Star Tribune is an innovative modern media organization building on an extraordinary 159-year legacy. With seven Pulitzer Prizes and numerous other accolades, we stand as a beacon of journalistic excellence in Minnesota. We are the heart and voice of the North.

Our mission is to build a better Minnesota by connecting us with the people, ideas, and stories that strengthen our communities. We’re seeking dynamic leaders who are passionate about journalism and democracy to help shape this future. If you are excited about reinventing one of our state’s most trusted institutions and leading us into a new era of growth and excellence, we want to hear from you.

We are seeking an ambitious Immigration Reporter at our headquarters in Minneapolis MN to own one of Minnesota’s most consequential and dynamic beats: immigration and the changing communities reshaping the state.

This person will play a central role in reporting the real-world impact of one of the country’s most divisive political and policy issues. Decisions made in Washington, at the State Capitol and by local governments can have immediate consequences for Minnesota families, workplaces, schools and communities.

We want a reporter who can operate on both fronts: break important news as immigration policy and enforcement change and produce distinctive enterprise journalism that helps readers understand what those changes mean.

This reporter will develop authoritative sourcing inside immigrant communities as well as among government officials, advocates, attorneys, employers, law enforcement and others shaping immigration policy and its consequences. The goal is journalism readers cannot get elsewhere — reporting that reveals what is happening, holds powerful institutions accountable and captures how immigration is changing Minnesota.

Enterprise on this beat should go well beyond profiles and stories about individual communities. We want reporting that identifies larger forces and important changes: how immigration is reshaping Minnesota’s workforce and economy; how federal policy is playing out here; how enforcement decisions affect communities; how newcomers are changing cities and institutions; and how political conflict over immigration is influencing Minnesota.

Success will be measured by the ability to break meaningful news, develop deep and diverse sources, produce ambitious and original enterprise journalism and make the Star Tribune an essential source for understanding immigration in Minnesota.

You will
  • Own breaking news and enterprise coverage of immigration and immigrant communities across Minnesota.
  • Build deep sourcing among immigrants and community leaders and within government, law enforcement, advocacy organizations, the legal system and other institutions.
  • Break news with speed, accuracy and authority while explaining why developments matter.
  • Produce distinctive enterprise and accountability journalism about immigration policy, enforcement, demographic change and their impact on Minnesota.
  • Use public records, data and other reporting tools to examine how government agencies and powerful institutions make and carry out decisions.
  • Identify stories with statewide and national significance and connect national immigration developments to their consequences in Minnesota.
  • Use audience insights to identify unanswered questions and opportunities to reach readers who may not currently turn to the Star Tribune for immigration coverage.
  • Work with visual journalists and colleagues across the newsroom and use formats including video, audio, newsletters and live coverage when they strengthen the journalism.
Qualifications
  • A portfolio of published work that demonstrates a record of breaking news, developing sources and producing deeply reported enterprise journalism.
  • Strong news judgment and the ability to turn complicated policy and contentious issues into clear, compelling journalism.
  • The ability to build trust with sources from different cultural, economic and political backgrounds and perspectives while maintaining journalistic independence.
  • Strong reporting and writing skills and high standards for accuracy and fairness.
  • Experience using public records, data or other accountability-reporting tools.
  • An understanding of how audiences consume journalism digitally and a willingness to experiment with different forms of storytelling.
  • The ability to multitask and juggle priorities on deadline.
  • Knowledge of Minnesota and experience covering immigration, government, demographic change or diverse communities are preferred. Language skills relevant to Minnesota’s immigrant communities are also valuable.
  • Must be currently legally authorized to work in the U.S. without sponsorship for employment visa status (e.g., H1B status, 0-1, TM, CPT, OPT, etc.). We are unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment Visa at this time.

The reporter will work regularly from the Minnesota Star Tribune’s downtown Minneapolis headquarters.
