Job summary

ExxonMobil is seeking a Senior Advisor, State Government Relations to lead our Illinois policy engagement and influence in the Midwest. You will shape advocacy strategies, manage influential relationships with officials and industry groups, and coordinate cross-functional policy initiatives across states.

The role requires deep policy expertise, strategic leadership, and a proven ability to navigate complex political environments while safeguarding the company's interests and reputation.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree required; advanced degree in public policy, law, political science, business, or related field preferred.
• Minimum of 10 years of experience engaging with state policymakers, government officials, or regulatory agencies, preferably in government relations/public affairs.
• Demonstrated success developing and executing legislative, regulatory, and stakeholder engagement strategies.
• Strong understanding of state legislative and regulatory processes, particularly Illinois and Midwest.
• Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication; ability to translate complex policy into clear messages.
• Strong strategic thinking and analytical capabilities; anticipate policy developments and risks.
• Proven ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
• Highly collaborative and influential across functions and stakeholder groups.
• Experience representing organizations before legislative bodies and regulatory agencies.

Responsibilities

• Lead Illinois state government relations strategy and support Midwest advocacy efforts.
• Develop and maintain a network of elected officials, regulators, trade associations, and stakeholders to advance priorities.
• Represent ExxonMobil with policymakers and regulators; coordinate advocacy through coalitions and partners.
• Monitor and influence legislative, regulatory, and political developments affecting business and reputation.
• Advise leaders on policy trends, opportunities, and risks; develop advocacy strategies.
• Collaborate with State Government Relations and cross-functional teams on coordinated policy efforts.
• Lead issue advocacy campaigns, policy positions, communications, and coalition-building.
• Strengthen ExxonMobil's reputation and influence among external audiences in the region.
• Ensure consistent execution of advocacy strategies across priority policy initiatives.
