Job summary

The Veterinary Medical Center at Ohio State University invites applications for a Veterinary Care Assistant 2 to join the Large Animal ICU team. The role supports ill and injured animals and assists clinicians, staff and students in day-to-day operations.

Duties include basic patient care, collection of lab specimens, patient assessment and restraint, training student employees, and caring for hospitalized animals. Schedule is 40 hours weekly on Third Shift; background check may apply.

Responsibilities

• providing basic patient care functions
• assisting in the collection of lab specimens such as blood, urine, and feces for testing
• assisting with patient assessment, restraint and treatments
• assisting with training student employees in prescribed care of animals
• comforting and caring for hospitalized animal patients
• walking patients and providing clean housing, food, and water at all times
• monitoring patients and notifying higher level technician or veterinarian of any unusual changes or symptoms
• transporting patients within the Veterinary Medical Center
• stocking supplies including feed, medical supplies and equipment
• cleaning and disinfecting treatment areas, animals housing units, adjacent areas and supporting equipment following prescribed sanitation procedures and observing rules of epidemiology to prevent spread of disease
• carrying out prescribed bedding
• performing daily cleaning of outdoor areas and VMC entrances
• cleaning of all animal areas including windows, floors, light covers, ledges, hallways, vents, receiving rooms etc.
• notifying supervisor of need for non-routine repairs
• assisting with laundry
• providing clerical support when necessary
• and other duties as assigned
