Applications are invited for Registrars looking to join the Critical Care team at Waikato Hospital for the 2026/2027 training year.
The Waikato Hospital Critical Care Unit is a vibrant and exciting place to work. The critical care department is made up of 16 intensive care beds and 12 HDU beds in a modern purpose-built facility. New technology surrounds this department. Registrars work across the critical care units, looking after arguably the broadest range of patients in New Zealand. The patient population includes a large trauma centre, neurosurgical ICU, cardiac surgery ICU, general adult ICU, and limited paediatric ICU. Registrars are involved in transport across the Te Manawa Taki regional hospitals by helicopter, plane, and road.
Registrars are expected to work hard but will reap the rewards of experience with procedures and the development of important decision-making skills.

Waikato Hospital Critical Care Unit is ideal for those training in intensive care or considering this specialty as a future career. It is backed by C24 accreditation from the College of Intensive Care Medicine and a supportive team of specialists and senior registrars. Weekly teaching involves specialists and registrars, with bedside teaching including echocardiography.
As an ICU Registrar, you will ideally be;
This role provides experience in patient assessment and resuscitation, managing acutely ill and injured patients, and includes some paediatric high-dependency patients. You will be involved in hospital-wide MET (Medical Emergency Team) activities, attending cardiac arrest calls, taking patient referrals, and working within Critical Care. The work is physically, mentally, and emotionally demanding, with a higher patient mortality rate than other roles in the hospital. However, you will be part of a multidisciplinary team with strong collegiality, support, and active teaching.
