We invite applications for Registrars to join the Critical Care team at Waikato Hospital for the 2026/2027 training year.
The Waikato Hospital Critical Care Unit features 16 ICU beds and 12 HDU beds in a modern facility equipped with the latest technology. Registrars gain experience across a broad patient spectrum, including trauma, neurosurgery, cardiac surgery, general adult ICU, and limited paediatric ICU. The role involves regional transport by helicopter, plane, and road.
While demanding, this role offers valuable procedural experience and decision-making skill development.

The Waikato Hospital Critical Care Unit is ideal for those training in or considering a career in intensive care. It is accredited by C24 from the College of Intensive Care Medicine and supported by experienced staff. Weekly teaching sessions, including bedside teaching and echocardiography, are conducted with specialists and registrars.

This role involves patient assessment, resuscitation, and management of acutely ill and injured patients, including some paediatric high dependency cases. Active participation in hospital-wide MET, cardiac arrest calls, patient referrals, and critical care activities is expected. The work is challenging but supported by a multidisciplinary team committed to teaching and collegiality.
