Job summary

Socket.dev is seeking an ice arena technician to learn and assist in preparing and maintaining the facility ice floor for hockey practices, games, and other ice events. You will work under supervision to install and resurface ice, paint logos, and ensure proper ice quality.

The role includes operating ice-resurfacer and ice-edger, monitoring temperature/humidity, and supporting event conversions. Hours can include nights and weekends, and a valid Georgia driver’s license is required.

Qualifications

  • Read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Possess any licenses, certificates or training required by local, state, or national authorities for the operation of the equipment found in the facility.
  • Use and properly care for ice equipment, including ice-resurfacer and ice-edger with multiple manual controls, gears, and foot pedals. This requires good vision, hearing, and dexterity.
  • Show the ability to retain the knowledge in the practice and procedures related to ice installation, preparation, and maintenance; typical methods and techniques for maintaining, repairing, and building ice; and treatment of water and hydraulic equipment, as it is being taught.
  • Possess a thorough understanding of the operational procedures, facility capabilities, industry terminology, event-related services, and technical requirements for the types of events anticipated at the facility.
  • Follow and adhere to all safety precautions, rules, regulations, risk management and emergency procedures.
  • Meet the physical demands of the job, which include being able to get in and around the facility (requires personal mobility) and working from various heights. Must perform strenuous physical duties at times, including lifting, carrying, moving, and climbing.
  • Be able to withstand moderate to loud noises.
  • Operate portable radio.
  • Follow oral and written instructions and communicate effectively with others in both oral and written form.
  • Organize and prioritize to meet deadlines.
  • Work effectively under pressure and/or stringent schedule and produce accurate results.
  • Work as a team member as well as independently, exercising judgment and initiative.
  • Maintain an effective working relationship with clients, guests, employees, and others encountered in the course of employment.
  • Remain flexible and adjust to situations as they occur.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license and be able to legally operate a motor vehicle in the state of Georgia.

  • Assist in preparing ice for all practices, games, and other ice events. Duties include removing debris; checking ice depth; scraping, edging, and resurfacing ice.
  • Learn proper way to operate and maintain the ice-resurfacer and ice-edger.
  • Learn and become familiar with techniques for repairing and building ice around hockey goals and other areas that lose ice.
  • Learn proper techniques to maintain glass and dasher walls.
  • Learn proper techniques to monitor temperature and humidity levels.
  • Maintain ice and lay water as needed.
  • Work with Arena Operations & Ice Manager and Operations Ice Lead to prepare and cover ice for events that require a regular floor surface.
  • Operate and control some equipment via computers.
  • Assist with general employees who assist with installation and maintenance of ice.
  • Respond to visual and audible alarms from building automation and life safety systems.
  • Assist the Operations Department with the conversion process of preparation for events as needed.
  • Work extended and/or irregular hours including nights, weekends and holidays as needed.
