Job description

Position Summary

The Ice Rink Manager is responsible for the day-to-day operation, safety, and guest experience of the Long Center’s outdoor ice rink. This seasonal position oversees part-time staff, coordinates rink operations and scheduling, maintains a safe and welcoming environment for guests, and ensures the ice and related equipment are properly maintained and ready for use.

This position is ideal for a self-starter who enjoys working with the public, is comfortable learning and operating mechanical equipment, and can confidently balance hands-on rink operations with staff supervision and customer service.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Rink Operations & Safety

• Monitor the condition and functionality of the ice rink and surrounding facilities throughout each operating day.
• Operate the ice resurfacing machine (Zamboni) and ensure the ice is properly maintained, safe, and ready for public use and special events.
• Maintain a clean, safe, and organized area on and around the rink, performing routine checks of mechanical systems and equipment and promptly reporting maintenance or safety concerns.
• Clear ice and surrounding areas as needed during adverse weather conditions.
• Monitor supplies and coordinate ordering or replenishment of inventory as needed.
• Ensure rink operations comply with all applicable safety regulations, Long Center policies, and established rink procedures.

Staff Supervision & Scheduling

• Assist with the hiring and onboarding of seasonal, part-time staff.
• Create and maintain staff schedules to ensure appropriate coverage during all operating hours and special events.
• Supervise a team of approximately 2-4 seasonal employees responsible for guest services, skate rentals, and rink operations.
• Provide day-to-day direction, coaching, and support to rink staff.
• Foster a positive, professional, and customer-focused team environment.
• Address staff performance and operational concerns in coordination with Long Center leadership.
• Attend internal meetings as needed and collaborate with Long Center team.

Guest Experience & Customer Service

• Serve as a visible and welcoming presence for guests.
• Ensure guests understand and follow rink rules and safety requirements.
• Respond to customer questions, concerns, and complaints calmly, professionally, and efficiently.
• Work closely with Long Center staff to address guest needs, emergencies, and other situations requiring additional support.
• Work with Long Center team, OVG Concessions, and outside vendors to create unique experiences for guests to drive revenue and guest experience.
• Work with the Long Center Sales and Events team to manage private and semi-private events at the Ice Rink.
• Work with Long Center Marketing team to drive ticket sales and attendance.
• Create revenue generating experiences and offerings to drive profit and guest experience.
• Provide weekly financial reporting to Long Center leadership team.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Comfortable operating or learning to operate an ice resurfacing machine (Zamboni).
• Ability to learn and work with basic mechanical systems and equipment.
• Strong customer service skills and the ability to foster positive interactions with the public.
• Ability to remain calm, professional, and solution-oriented when addressing customer concerns or unexpected situations.
• Self-motivated and able to work independently while also collaborating effectively with Long Center staff.
• Ability to supervise and provide direction to seasonal staff.
• Ability to follow established safety procedures and consistently enforce rules and policies.

Education & Experience

• Previous customer service and staff management experience strongly preferred.
• Experience working in an ice arena, skating rink, recreation facility, or similar environment preferred.
• CPR/First Aid certification is a plus.

This temporary/seasonal role is expected to work full-time from approximately October 15-Jan 15, with a flexible schedule requiring evenings, weekends, and occasional overtime. This role pays $32.50/hour and is not eligible for company benefits, healthcare enrollment, or PTO accrual.

Physical & Work Requirements

This is an onsite role located at our beautiful performing arts center in the heart of Austin, TX.

• Position requires regular outdoor work, exposure to cold weather conditions, and significant time standing and walking/moving throughout the work area.
• Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
