Job summary

The City of Kettering’s Parks Recreation and Cultural Arts Department is seeking Temporary Part-Time Ice Arena Instructors for the Kettering Ice Arena to teach Learn to Skate USA classes and assist with ice shows and events.

Instructors must maintain safety, pass Learn to Skate USA background checks, hold First Aid/CPR and Ohio Concussion certifications, and commit to regular on-site attendance with Wednesday and Saturday lessons.

Qualifications

• Must hold current Learn to Skate USA instructor membership and certifications.
• Must pass Learn to Skate USA background check.
• Ohio Concussion certified.
• First Aid/CPR certification required.
• Valid Ohio Driver’s License required.
• Ability to skate at least 3 hours per class day.
• Regular on-site attendance with Wednesday and Saturday lesson times.
• Ability to sub when needed.

Responsibilities

• Instructs Learn to Skate USA group classes at Kettering Ice Arena;
• Assists with ice arena specialty events and ice shows;
• Organizes class activities and maintains rosters/attendance records;
• Evaluates skaters and issues report cards and certificates;
• Cleans up after classes and assists in event setup;
• Promotes City of Kettering group class program;
• Maintains professional demeanor on and off the ice;
• Communicates with skaters, parents, Learn to Skate coordinator, and staff in a positive manner;
• Ensures compliance with all department policies and procedures.

The City of Kettering’s Parks Recreation and Cultural Arts Department is recruiting to fill Temporary Part-Time Ice Arena Instructor positions for the Kettering Ice Arena. These positions are responsible for instructing Learn to Skate USA ice skating group classes assisting in ice arena specialty events and City of Kettering related ice shows.

Compensation: Pay range is $12.00 to $28.05 per hour. Entry rate is contingent upon candidate’s related skills knowledge and abilities. These Temporary Part-Time Ice Arena Instructor positions will be permitted to work up to 28 hours per week year-round.

• Instructs various levels of Learn to Skate USA group classes;
• Knowledge and understanding of Learn to Skate USA program;
• Teaches proper ice skating skills maintaining a safe, encouraging environment;
• Required to hold current yearly Learn to Skate USA instructor membership and certifications pertaining to Learn to Skate USA instructors;
• Required to pass a Learn to Skate USA background check;
• Required to be Ohio Concussion certified;
• Organizes class activities;
• Maintains class rosters and attendance records;
• Evaluates skaters on test day and fill out appropriate report cards and certificates;
• Assists with class set up and clean up;
• Carries out additional responsibilities assigned by Lesson Coordinator;
• Regular and predictable on-site attendance required with availability to work Wednesday and Saturday lesson times;
• Ability to skate at least 3 hours per class day;
• Available to sub if necessary when needed;
• Attendance at monthly in-service meetings required;
• Choreographs or assists in choreographing ice show and exhibitions numbers;
• Assists where needed in ice shows and exhibitions;
• Assists in arena specialty events;
• Hold certification in First Aid/CPR;
• Maintains a professional demeanor on and off the ice;
• Promotes City of Kettering group class program;
• Communicates with skaters, parents, Learn to Skate coordinator and ice arena staff in a positive manner;
• Enforces and follows all policies and procedures established by the City of Kettering Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts department;
• Must be able to establish effective working relationships and communicate with skaters, instructors, parents, Learn to Skate coordinator, City staff members, volunteers and the general public in a positive manner.

Possess current knowledge of Learn to Skate program and ice skating fundamentals. Ability to ice skate, teach required skating skills and assist skaters of all levels, abilities and ages. Ability to maintain and organize class records and documents. Ability to effectively communicate with skaters, parents, arena staff and patrons in a positive professional manner.

Some experience preferred, but not required. CPR for the Professional Rescuer and First Aid certification preferred (will be provided if not current) or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities Must possess valid Ohio Driver’s License.
