Qualifications

  • Registered Nurse license issued by the state where the team member practices.
  • IBCLC certification needs to be obtained within 1 year.

Responsibilities

  • Assess patient needs, diagnose lactation problems, plan and implement intervention, and evaluate outcomes.
  • Visit breastfeeding mothers while hospitalized and/or call post-discharge to assess learning needs and provide lactation support.
  • Provide outpatient care and consultation for families with breastfeeding difficulties and/or in providing outpatient newborn follow-up visits.
  • Develop, implement and manage outpatient lactation services and/or phone support; may include a breast pump rental and/or retail store.
  • Assist with development of and support staff who facilitate patient breastfeeding; identify staff learning needs and provide in-services.
  • Provide leadership and direction of breastfeeding to hospital staff and community utilizing current research.
