Job summary

Zachry Nuclear Engineering, Inc. seeks an experienced I&C Engineering Lead to support design, modernization, and commissioning of nuclear control systems at client facilities across the United States.

You will collaborate with senior engineers, drive technical reviews, and ensure designs meet nuclear safety and regulatory standards while supporting field operations and project delivery.

Qualifications

  • 15+ years of relevant hands-on engineering experience

  • Proven ability to lead technical work and engineering projects

Responsibilities

  • Lead I&C engineering and design activities for control system modifications
  • Develop engineering calculations, specifications, design criteria, and modification packages
  • Define project scope, technical requirements, and deliverables
  • Design and evaluate control system architectures and interfaces
  • Provide mentoring and technical guidance to junior engineers
  • Travel to client facilities and project locations as needed

Periodic travel to client facilities and Zachry office locations may be required.

Responsibilities
What You'll Do
Lead I&C Engineering and Design Activities
  • Support the design and implementation of instrumentation and control system modifications.
  • Develop engineering calculations, specifications, design criteria, and modification packages.
  • Define project scope, technical requirements, and design deliverables.
  • Design and evaluate control system architectures and functions.
  • Specify instrumentation, control valves, and related equipment.
  • Establish plant control system interfaces and I/O requirements.
  • Support digital transformation initiatives and modernization of legacy control systems.
Provide Technical Leadership
  • Lead complex technical assignments and engineering projects.
  • Apply engineering principles, industry standards, and best practices independently.
  • Troubleshoot challenging technical issues and develop effective solutions.
  • Guide engineering evaluations, design reviews, and technical decision-making processes.
Drive Project Success
  • Manage scope, schedule, budget, quality, and technical performance with minimal supervision.
  • Coordinate activities across engineering disciplines, clients, vendors, and project stakeholders.
  • Support project planning, execution, and successful delivery.
  • Identify risks early and implement proactive solutions.
Ensure Nuclear Quality and Compliance
  • Ensure designs comply with nuclear industry regulations, codes, and standards.
  • Support NRC licensing and regulatory requirements.
  • Participate in peer reviews and quality assurance activities.
  • Develop solutions that improve plant safety, reliability, and operational efficiency.
Mentor and Collaborate
  • Review engineering calculations, drawings, specifications, and technical documents.
  • Provide mentoring and technical guidance to junior team members.
  • Partner closely with Responsible Engineers and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Build strong relationships with clients and internal stakeholders.
Support Field Operations
  • Conduct plant walkdowns and field assessments.
  • Support installation, testing, commissioning, and troubleshooting activities.
  • Interface directly with plant personnel and client representatives.
  • Travel to nuclear facilities and project locations as needed.
Qualifications
Required Experience

One of the following qualifications is required:

  • 15+ years of relevant hands-on engineering experience, OR
  • Graduation from Naval Nuclear Power School and Prototype with a total of 15+ years of relevant hands-on engineering experience

In addition, candidates should possess:

  • Minimum 15 years of engineering experience
  • Experience with analog and/or digital control systems
  • Proven ability to lead technical work and engineering projects
Preferred Qualifications
Nuclear Industry Experience
  • Nuclear power plant engineering experience
  • Understanding of nuclear plant operations and procedures
  • Experience supporting licensing and regulatory activities
  • Hands-on field engineering experience in nuclear environments
Technical Expertise

Experience in one or more of the following areas:

  • Instrumentation & Control (I&C) system design
  • Digital control systems
  • Distributed Control Systems (DCS)
  • Control system integration
  • Legacy system modernization
  • Power generation systems
  • Nuclear codes and standards
  • NRC regulatory requirements

Physical And Site Requirements

To be successful in this role, candidates must be able to:

  • Obtain and maintain unescorted access to nuclear facilities
  • Pass required security screenings and drug testing
  • Perform field walkdowns in industrial plant environments
  • Climb ladders and access elevated work areas
  • Enter confined spaces and controlled hazardous areas when necessary
  • Work overtime as project and business needs require
  • Travel periodically to client and project sites
