Job summary

WSP USA seeks a Traffic Design Engineer to join our North Carolina practice with hybrid work options in Charlotte or Raleigh. The role focuses on traffic signal design, ITS concepts, and roadway improvements using OpenRoad Designer, MicroStation, or AutoCAD, collaborating with engineers, planners, and DOT partners.

Ideal candidates hold a Civil or Electrical Eng degree, 1–3 years of design experience, and an Engineer in Training certification to obtain within 6 months.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree in Civil or Electrical Engineering required.
• 1–3 years of engineering and technical design experience.
• Engineer in Training (EIT) certification to be obtained within 6 months.
• Familiarity with DOT advisory circulars and procedures.
• Ability to perform technical computations and interpret plans and specs.
• Ability to inspect transportation corridors and roadways.
• Strong written and verbal communication with engineers, planners, and clients.
• Willingness to travel occasionally.

Responsibilities

• Collect, compile, and analyze data from sites, surveys, GIS data, and maps for project development and construction.
• Perform professional traffic engineering work, investigations, and inspections of site conditions and roadways.
• Develop innovative concepts for intersection and corridor improvements with authorities and clients.
• Design traffic signals and communication networks to improve real-time corridor operations.
• Incorporate design requirements and operating strategies for safety and functionality.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to lay out roadways, estimate costs, and ensure QA/QC.
• Provide technical assistance on signal system design, monitoring, and operations analysis.
• Maintain QA/QC standards for accurate measurements and reporting.
• Assist with scoping of medium-sized projects.
• Interact with regulatory agencies and clients professionally.
