MST- FIT Therapist

PURPOSE:

The Jewish Board community residence programs (Holland Avenue, Bruner House, Westchester Ave, Staten Island) serve youth displaying a wide range of behaviors including psychiatric diagnoses, trauma and loss, and related family/behavioral issues. The target for MST-FIT focuses on youth, 12 to 17 ½ years old, transitioning from the community residence back to home (as defined by caregivers or referral source). Program works with the family from 2 months prior to discharge until 4 months post discharge to support the family to successfully reintegrate the youth home.

POSITION OVERVIEW:

Primary goals of MST-FIT treatment:

  • Transition youth from residential facilities back to their natural environment with a minimum of disruptions and reduce risk of youth being placed again.
  • Eliminate or significantly reduce the frequency and severity of the youth’s referral behavior(s);
  • Empower parents with the skills and resources needed to independently address the inevitable difficulties that arise in raising children and adolescents, and to empower youth to cope with family, peer, school, and neighborhood problems.

KEY ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Conduct MST assessment including review of referral information, identifying, and engaging key participants, identifying systemic strengths and weaknesses, and developing an analysis of the fit of problem behaviors within the ecological context.
  • Engage primary caregiver and other key participants in active change-oriented treatment by identifying and overcoming barriers to engagement.
  • Be available and on call 24/7 to provide clinical support to participants and their family of care.
  • Implement a problem conceptualization, treatment planning, intervention implementation, outcomes review and strategy revision procedure using the MST Analytic Process.
  • Maintain clear and concise documentation of treatment efforts that promote peer and supervisory review and feedback, and that demonstrate compliance with the nine MST Principles and the MST Analytic Process.
  • Ability to engage and collaborate with all relevant systems and key participants within each system, to maintain alignment throughout MST treatment.
  • Provide direct clinical treatment using methods compatible with MST principles and practices.
  • Participate in all MST training, supervision, consultation, and MST Therapist development activities.
  • Facilitate and Co-facilitate Integrated Treatment Model (ITM) DBT skill groups to youth in the community residences.

EDUCATIONAL/TRAINING REQUIRED:

  • Master’s degree in clinical or counseling Psychology, Social Work, or a related subject area required and a license in a counseling field (LMSW, LCSW, LMFT, LMHC, LCAT, etc); limited permit will be considered.

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED/LANGUAGE PREFERENCE:

  • Bilingual (English/ Spanish) Therapist preferred
  • Direct use of pragmatic (i.e., structural, strategic and functional) family therapies
  • Therapy with children and adults using cognitive behavioral techniques
  • Couples therapy using behaviorally-based approaches
  • Behavioral therapy targeting school behavior and academic performance
  • Implementation of interventions within or between systems in the youth’s natural ecology that affect or influence the behavior of the youth (i.e., family, peer, school, and neighborhood)
  • Collaboration and partnership with community agencies
  • Previous work providing in-home or community-based therapy services
  • Professional licensure in related field preferred but not required

COMPUTER SKILLS REQUIRED:

Prior experience with electronic health records and Microsoft Office

VISUAL AND MANUAL Dexterity:

  • Travel in the community with residents utilizing agency vehicle
  • Engage in physical activities with the residence
  • Ability to read paper and electronic documents
  • Ability to perform data entry into various computer programs as needed

WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL EFFORT

  • The majority of services are provided in the community, with less time spent in office-based work
  • While the offices of the Jewish Board are accessible in accordance with the ADA, the sites to which staff may need to travel may or may not be
  • To perform the essential functions of this job the candidate must be able to travel within New York City carrying equipment such as a notebook, forms, laptop, mobile hotspot and cell phone weighing up to approximately 10 pounds.
  • To perform the essential functions of this job, the candidate is routinely required to sit (60% of the time) and stand (20% of the time), and travel to and from appointments using public or private transportation options (20% of the time).
  • Risks/hazards associated with the position are those which may be encountered traveling around New York City.
