Job summary

The Hartford is seeking an Associate Underwriter for its Small Business Underwriting team. This 14-week hybrid onboarding and risk education program combines self-directed and virtual sessions with on-the-job practice and mentoring to prepare you for a formal underwriting career.

You will support small business owners across lines such as BOP, Commercial Auto, Workers' Comp and Umbrella, learning to price risks, analyze data, and partner with sales to grow accounts.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree preferred, or equivalent combination of education, training, and Insurance experience.
• Strong sales skills with the ability to negotiate and sell all messages including with those that may be difficult.
• Excellent written and interpersonal communication and presentation skills.
• Ability to think analytically about business problems, make recommendations, and propose solutions.
• Demonstration of resilience and an entrepreneurial spirit.
• Solid time, organizational, and desk management skills.
• Goal oriented with a strong desire to deliver outcomes in timely manner.
• Acts with a sense of urgency and is responsive to internal and external customer needs.
• Travel approximately 10% of the time.

Responsibilities

• Support small business clients on the underwriting team across BOP, Commercial Auto, Workers' Comp, and Umbrella.
• Learn to develop and price risks, analyze loss and risk information, and identify red flags.
• Partner with sales reps to achieve profit and growth objectives.
• Build and leverage relationships with agents to obtain new accounts and drive results.
