Job summary

AMD is seeking a Photonics Design Engineering intern/co-op in San Jose, CA, for the Spring/Summer 2027 term. You will work on photonic integrated circuits and optical subsystems, performing simulations, data analysis and workflow automation using Python and engineering tools.

The role is hybrid (2–3 days onsite) with 40 hours per week, January 25, 2027 to August 13, 2027. You will collaborate with photonics, packaging, systems and test engineers to tackle challenging problems and gain hands-on

Qualifications

• Pursuing a Master’s in EE, Optical Engineering, Photonics, Applied Physics or related field.
• Familiar with photonics, optics, semiconductor devices or optical communications.
• Experience with engineering simulation, modeling or data analysis.
• Proficiency in Python, MATLAB, or similar for computing and automation.
• Knowledge of photonic device characterization or optical measurements.

Responsibilities

• Assist in design, simulation and evaluation of photonic integrated circuits and optical subsystems.
• Perform photonic device and circuit simulations and compare results to improve design performance.
• Develop automated workflows for photonic design, testing and data analysis using Python.
• Gain hands-on experience characterizing photonic devices and collaborate with engineering teams.
