Job summary

AMD Photonics Design Intern in San Jose, CA, offers a hybrid 2-3x/week schedule for Spring/Summer 2027. You will assist in photonic IC design, simulations, and data-driven optimization while gaining hands-on experience with cross-functional engineering teams.

You will collaborate on automated workflows, device characterization, and problem solving with photonics, packaging, systems, and test engineers to advance AI and computing technologies.

Qualifications

• Pursuing a Master's in Electrical or Optical Engineering or related field.
• Familiarity with photonics, optics, semiconductor devices, or optical communication systems.
• Experience with engineering simulation, modeling, or data analysis techniques.
• Experience with Python, MATLAB, or similar for technical computing and automation.
• Knowledge of photonic device characterization, optical measurements, or related methods.

JOB DETAILS:

• Location: San Jose, CA, USA
• Onsite/Hybrid: This role requires the student to work full time (40 hours a week), in a hybrid 2-3x/week work structure throughout the duration of the co- op/intern term.
• Duration: Spring/Summer 2027 Co- Op: January 25, 2027 - August 13, 2027

WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING

• You will assist in the design, simulation, and evaluation of photonic integrated circuits (PICs) and optical subsystems for next-generation computing applications.
• You will perform photonic device and circuit simulations, analyze measurement data, and compare results against simulation predictions to improve design performance.
• We will involve you in developing automated workflows for photonic design, testing, and data analysis using Python and other engineering tools.
• You will gain hands on experience characterizing photonic devices and collaborating with photonics, packaging, systems, and test engineers to solve complex technical challenges.

WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR

We are seeking highly motivated Photonics Design Engineering intern/co- op to join our team. In this role -

• Currently pursuing an Master's in Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Photonics, Applied Physics, or a related technical field.
• Familiarity with photonics, optics, semiconductor devices, or optical communication systems.
• Experience with engineering simulation, modeling, or data analysis techniques.
• Experience with Python, MATLAB, or similar programming languages for technical computing and automation.
• Knowledge of photonic device characterization, optical measurements, or related experimental methods.

Preferred Qualifications

• Research or coursework in silicon photonics, photonic integrated circuits, integrated optics, or optical communications.
• Experience with photonic design and simulation tools such as Ansys Lumerical, Luceda IPKISS, COMSOL Multiphysics, Synopsys OptSim/OptoCompiler, or Cadence Virtuoso.
• Familiarity with optical test equipment including optical spectrum analyzers (OSA), vector network analyzers (VNA), tunable lasers, optical power meters, and high-speed oscilloscopes.
• Exposure to semiconductor fabrication processes or device characterization methodologies.
