Job summary

AMD is seeking a PhD-level Photonics & Optical Systems Engineering Intern/Co-Op to advance next-generation optical interconnects and photonic devices. You will work onsite in Santa Clara or San Jose, contributing to design, simulation, validation, and characterization of photonic ICs and high-speed links.

You will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, gain hands-on experience with industry-grade equipment, and help drive technology development for AI infrastructure and computing platforms.

Qualifications

• Pursuing a PhD in Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Photonics, or related field.
• Experience or coursework in silicon photonics, PICs, optical communications, or high-speed interconnects.
• Familiarity with Python, MATLAB, or similar computing tools for analysis.

Responsibilities

• Assist design, simulation, and characterization of photonic ICs and optical transceivers.
• Support laboratory testing and performance analysis of optical and electrical systems.
• Contribute to data collection, automation, and modeling to improve design efficiency.
• Collaborate with photonics, electrical, and validation teams on project tasks.
• Document results and contribute to technical reports.
• Support multiple intern opportunities across AMD teams.
