Job summary

Penn State University’s Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) seeks a Mechanical Engineering Technologist to support AMME in design, development, and testing of advanced materials and processes for Navy and ARL programs.

The role focuses on CAD modeling, drawings, GD&T, and collaboration with engineers to derive technical requirements and support system validation. Hybrid on-site/work-from-home in State College, PA with occasional travel.

Qualifications

  • 3D CAD design and engineering drawing development.
  • Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings.
  • Knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Proficient in engineering calculations.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills.

Responsibilities

  • Develop detailed 3D models using CAD to support design and development activities.
  • Create and maintain engineering drawings for components, assemblies, and systems.
  • Perform tolerance stack‑up analyses and apply GD&T principles.
  • Collaborate with project leadership to develop conceptual designs for complex systems.
  • Define technical requirements supporting design and development of products.
  • Develop and document assembly, integration, and test procedures for system development.
  • Assemble, integrate, and test hardware to verify performance against requirements.
  • Support field testing, including test prep, execution, troubleshooting, and evaluation of system performance.
