Job summary

The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) seeks a Dynamics Analyst to shape the technical direction for high‑impact aerospace analyses. You will collaborate across aerodynamics, structures, and thermal teams to deliver multiphysics solutions and produce concise reports for sponsors and partners.

Based in Laurel, MD, this full‑time role requires MATLAB proficiency, a 6+ year dynamics background, and the ability to obtain a Secret clearance; telework possible up to two days

Qualifications

  • BS degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering or equivalent.
  • 6+ years of research and/or professional experience in dynamics.
  • Proficient in MATLAB.
  • Willing to work full-time at the APL campus in Laurel, MD; telework up to two days per week under certain conditions.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team with a history of contributions to multidisciplinary teams.
  • Self-starter with ability to set direction with little supervision.
  • Proficiency in related fields such as Lagrangian dynamics, multi-body dynamics, modal analysis, LabVIEW, flight hardware qualification, multi-physics simulation, force reconstruction.
  • Strong written and oral presentation skills; able to communicate complex concepts to diverse audiences.
  • Willingness to travel up to 5% as needed.
  • Ability to obtain Secret level security clearance; U.S. citizenship required.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and validate mathematical models of aerospace systems using MATLAB and commercial tools (e.g., Abaqus, SIMPACK, ANSYS).
  • Translate first principles physics into robust simulation tools and models.
  • Perform first principles dynamics, vibration, and aeroelastic stability analyses.
  • Generate realistic load cases for flight-vehicle simulations.
  • Support onsite and offsite shock, vibration, and performance testing and process test data to reconcile results with predictions.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to integrate multiphysics solutions.
  • Document analyses, produce technical reports, and present findings to internal teams, sponsors, and external partners.
  • Leverage internal funding to pursue self-directed research, patents, or conference papers.
  • Produce concise technical reports, design reviews, and briefings.
  • Present findings to internal teams, sponsors, and peer organizations.
