Job summary

National Audubon Society is seeking a Communications Associate to support Audubon’s SC team, boosting visibility and storytelling across web, email, blogs, and social channels. The role collaborates with leadership to develop annual plans and manage day-to-day communications and media activities.

You will develop content with program staff, create newsletters, lead media outreach, and coordinate events, with hybrid work in Columbia/SC area and occasional travel.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree required in journalism, communications, marketing, political science, environmental studies or related fields.
• 1-2 years of PR, brand management, writing, editing, campaign organizing or advocacy.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills for working with multiple stakeholder groups.
• Excellent English writing, spelling and grammar; focus on online communications.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office; ability to learn online tools.
• Commitment to inclusion and belonging.
• Experience with digital platforms including WordPress, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, EveryAction or Mobilize.
• Photography, sound and video editing experience is a plus; SC knowledge.
• Willing to travel; some evenings/weekends.
• Reliable transportation or driver's license.

Responsibilities

• Support Senior Communications Manager in annual communications work plans for Audubon's SC team.
• Gather stories of conservation and policy work; lead storytelling across newsletters, blogs, social media, and materials.
• Produce and manage video and photo coverage of programs where appropriate.
• Assist in securing local earned media; manage media lists and reporter relationships.
• Support outreach and advocacy campaigns using tools like EveryAction and Mobilize.
• Coordinate events with outreach and media coverage; document outcomes.
• Track metrics across channels and prepare regular staff reports.
• Prepare materials for community and campus chapters to amplify advocacy.
• Support a culture of philanthropy and public funding efforts.
• Maintain safety culture.
