Job summary

MKS Instruments in Methuen, MA is seeking an Automation Engineer to develop automation solutions for diverse products across global production sites. This hybrid role collaborates with manufacturing and automation teams to improve efficiency, cost, quality, and capacity.

You will design and integrate automated systems, work with design, controls, and robotics engineers, and lead experiments to evaluate new technologies and motion systems. Strong communication is essential.

Qualifications

• BS degree in engineering (Mechanical/Mechatronics/Industrial Eng) or equivalent.
• 2+ years designing/implementing automated manufacturing systems.
• Experience with sensors (photoelectric, proximity, vision), pneumatics/hydraulics, VFDs, robots, servo motors.
• Ability to read electrical schematics, design control panels, implement safety circuits (E-stops, light curtains).
• Clear communication of concepts/status to technical and non-technical teammates.

Responsibilities

• Design, specify, and integrate automated mechanical systems (motion, end effectors, fixtures, conveyors).
• Develop machine concepts and layouts using CAD (SolidWorks).
• Select and integrate motors, actuators, gearboxes, sensors, pneumatics and safety devices.
• Support design reviews, prototyping, startup, commissioning, and troubleshooting.
• Lead integration, startup, verification, and commissioning of automated solutions.
• Design experiments to evaluate new automation technologies and processes.
• Collaborate across divisions to standardize automation practices.
